• High prevalence of refractive conditions, ocular diseases and systemic medical problems with ocular complications.
• Extensive experience interpreting Humphrey Visual Fields, OCT, HRT, GDx, pachymetry, and laboratory results.

Chairperson for Clinical Education 1996-2009
• Supervised twenty-one academic courses (eleven with laboratories) which develop students’ clinical skills in the areas of primary care and specialty eye care during the three years of the didactic curriculum.

• Developed and coordinated the student remediation process in the area of primary care clinical skills and assessed students’ readiness for continued progress in the clinical skills program. Recruited clinical tutors and supervised the clinical skills tutorial program.
• Solely responsible for the assessment of student performance at the conclusion of remediation programs.
• Contributed to the Institutional self-study and participated in the accreditation process for North Central Association of Colleges and the Council on Optometric Education.
• Developed, implemented, supervised and worked within the Clinical Honor’s Program that provided direct patient care experiences for second year students within the Illinois Eye Institute.
Director of Clinical Residencies 1995-1996
• Supervised the Clinical Residency programs at, and affiliated with, the Illinois College of Optometry
• Along with the Residency Coordinator developed a new residency program in the area of Pediatric/Binocular Vision. Supervised the development of the self-study and worked with the Coordinator to achieve accredited status for the program.
• Coordinated and supervised the educational component of the Residency Program through the Faculty Conference and Residency Grand Rounds.
• Working with the Program Coordinators supervised the Residents’ evaluation process and coordinated the evaluation process of the Residency Programs.
Coordinator, Primary Care Residency Program 1987-1995
• Developed and supervised the Primary Care Residency program, the first accredited Residency Program at the Illinois College of Optometry.
• Developed the educational components of the program; weekly conferences, monthly journal clubs, teaching methods seminar, monthly student presentations, and quarterly grand rounds.
• Coordinated the interview process and selection process for the Residents.
• Coordinated the evaluation process of the residents, the program, and the faculty.
• Developed the self-study and coordinated the site-visit for the program’s initial accreditation and developed and submitted the yearly reports to the ACOE following accreditation of the program.
Coordinator, Optometric Science Curriculum 1994-1996
• Supervised the five optometric methods courses with laboratories within the Department of Clinical Education.
• Reviewed and modified the optometric science curriculum that resulted in the change from five four-hour laboratory sections to six two-hour laboratory sections.
• Implemented case-based discussion groups to enhance problem-solving skills.
• Coordinated the activities of course coordinators to provide consistency of academic policy, teaching methodologies, and student assessment within the course sequence.
• Worked with individual course instructors to develop the laboratory manuals that continue to serve as the basis of the current curriculum.
• Assisted faculty members to develop alternative course delivery teaching formats.
• Developed capital budget items for equipment replacement within the optometry skills teaching laboratory.
• With individual course coordinators developed objectives-based assessment techniques to assess students’ clinical competence prior to students beginning direct patient care within the Illinois Eye Institute.
Chief, Primary Care Module A 1985-1994
• With four other Primary Care Module Chiefs coordinated the activities and developed the academic policies for the Primary Care Service of the Illinois Eye Institute including the implementation and usage of diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceutical agents.
• Supervised the patient care delivered by the two full-time faculty members, 2-3 part-time faculty members, and the Primary Care Resident who worked within Primary Care Module A.
• Supervised the clinical training of forty third and fourth year students.
• Coordinated and participated in the weekly hour-long Module Conferences held separately for third and fourth year students focusing on topics related to detection and management of eye disease.
• Developed and supervised patient care quality assurance process for Primary Care Module A.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Coordinator, Optometry 1.2 (CLE 162.3) 1994-2011
• Sole course instructor and laboratory coordinator for the optometric methods course that presents the essential optometric skills;
Keratometry retinoscopy monocular subjective refraction accommodation balance duochrome test.
• Developed an instructional DVD to augment the delivery of the laboratory techniques portion of the course.
• Laboratory instructor in the six two-hour laboratory sections; supervise the teaching activities of three other laboratory instructors and nine laboratory teaching assistants.
• Reassess performance of those students who do not achieve the competency-based objectives of the clinical skills portion of the course and coordinate the remediation process for those students who are unsuccessful a second time.
