EDUCATION
Shorter University
**-**** – 05-2005
I graduated with a BMus in piano performance. I won awards in piano at the state and regional level, and as a sophomore placed third in the Music Teachers National Association Composition Competition. I accompanied the top-tier choir, the most successful singers, and accompanied and music-directed Musical Theatre Shows.
Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Bloomington
08-2005 – 05-2009(Incomplete)
Although I left Bloomington with a 3.05 GPA, I did not complete my degree program in Choral Conducting. I continued to work as a pianist and musical director, and I met several professional musicians who gave me opportunities to work for opera festivals, opera companies, symphony orchestras in the US, Canada, and Ireland. As this was both lucrative and extremely beneficial to my education as a working musician, I decided to take work and forego the degree.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Dalton First Presbyterian Church - Director of Music/Organist
8/1/20-3/31/22
I oversee all things musical in the life of the church. I accompany Sunday Service from the organ, plan and program music in conjunction with the Pastor, and rehearse each ensemble, weekly. N.B. My responsibilities are limited due to COVID-19, but what I just described is what will be expected of me, post-pandemic. In addition to my regular duties, I plan to start a concert/recital series that will eventually become a music festival-for the church as well as the community.
Murray County Schools - Chorus Director/Group Piano Instructor
09/2018–03/2020
I was in charge of two chorus classes and three lab or group piano classes. In addition, I was Music Director for the Theatre Department.
Seeing a need for collaboration in the Arts, I formed the first All-County High School and Middle School Choral Project since North Murray High was built, called “Elevate.” We performed for the public at the Christmas Tree Festival at the downtown Chatsworth Park.
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church – Choirmaster/Organist
08/2014-12/2015
I oversaw 2 choirs and a handbell ensemble, in addition to leading services from the organ. I programmed all music, including Sunday hymns following the Lectionary. I also maintained a modest, but sufficient budget. Despite dwindling attendance, the church saw growth in the children’s choir and the Chancel Choir thrived. In the end, the church could not support my salary, so out of necessity, I had to leave.
Dalton State College – Adjunct Professor of Music
01/2015-12/2015
The college created an Associate’s Degree in music, and I was hired to build and conduct the choir, teach piano and voice. I was also the campus carillonneur, playing at large events and a 15-minute recital every Friday. My first semester at DSC, my choir had 12 singers. The second semester, the choir had 40 singers. There were not enough music majors to continue the degree program, so it was disbanded.
Freelance Musician
06/2009–08/2014
I have conducted professional symphony orchestras and have worked on music staffs in opera companies and festivals from Seattle to Dublin, I was Asst. Conductor for the professional choral ensemble, “Apollo’s Voice,” and have conducted the Calgary Boys’ Choir. In 2015, I was invited to audition and interview to be the next Artistic Director of the professional men’s choral ensemble, “Chanticleer.” I have accompanied Grammy, Tony, Emmy, and Oscar-winning artists, and my compositions and arrangements have been played by the Atlanta Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Fort Wayne Symphony, Carmel Symphony, and the Napa Valley Youth Orchestra. I was commissioned by a theatre company in Derry, Northern Ireland in 2012 to compose an original score for a play that was presented in celebration of Derry being selected as the UK City of Culture in the year. Recently, I was commissioned to arrange a piece for two-time Grammy Award-winning soprano, Sylvia McNair, for the Gubernatorial Race in Indiana. Incidentally, President Joe Biden quoted a verse in his Inaugural Address from the very song I had arranged, written by Gene Scheer for the Ken Burns docu-series, “The War.” My works are published by GIA Music and Northstar Music, LLC.
