MANUFACTURING OF ETHYLENE BY USING SUGAR SOLUTION

Ethylene is an important chemical in the petrochemical industry. The main manufacturing method is steam cracking of naphtha and shorter hydrocarbons. Therefore processes to produce ethylene in a more environmentally friendly way are developed. In one of these new processes bio ethanol is dehydrated to ethylene over a catalyst Ethylene is currently the most consumed intermediate product in the world.

The concentrated sugar solution mixed with lignocelluloses biomass composed of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin. The mixture is fermentated by using yeast and produce bio ethanol with chemical impurities and water. Then bio ethanol is separated from chemical impurities by distillation to get bio ethanol and small amount of water. A small amount of drying agent (CaO or MgSO4) is added and again distillated to remove traces of water. The purified bio ethanol is dehydrated and produced ethylene by using hot aluminium oxide as a catalyst
