Target Corporation, Minneapolis, MN December 2019 to Present Senior Director, Network Engineering
Responsible for building strong, engaged, technical, and product-focused teams. Accountable for all network engineering platforms at Target including WAN/MAN, LAN, Directory Services, Network Security (firewalls, DNS< proxy), Data Center Networking, and Wireless-based technologies for all corporate, stores, distribution center and international locations.
• Manage a Network Services Infrastructure team of 110 team members (85 Minneapolis/20 Bangalore), consisting of Network Engineers, Directors, Project Managers, and Scrum Masters both onshore and offshore. This highly skilled team delivers several services across multiple Data Centers and Cloud Based Technologies.
• Manage budgets, projects (hardware refresh cycles, annual code version upgrades, Duplicate ecommerce site implemented for redundancy/availability), enhancements, changes and research new technologies.
• Manage Security/PCI/SOX audit findings/remediations, certificates, patching, RFPs, hardware refresh cycles and code upgrades.
• Introduced open hardware and an automated deployment for new stores.
• Applied reliability engineering disciplines across network engineering. Target Corporation, Minneapolis, MN June 2011 to November 2019 Senior Director, Data/Streaming/Measurement Services Engineering Leader responsible for transforming and advancing our Datastore Engineering culture, technology and practices at Target. This included RDBMS Data Stores (Oracle, SQL, Postgres), No SQL (Redis, Cassandra, Mongo, Elastic, Neo4J), developing the Corporate Measurement Pipeline, Digital Data Analytics and Streaming
(Kafka, Autobahn, Graph QL) technologies. Drove a follow the sun model with 145 Team Members (93 Minneapolis/52 Bangalore).
• Transitioned a profile of 9,000 Databases from 70% commercial to 66% open source over a two-year period.
• Created a Postgres team and NoSQL team out of existing up skilled resources to meet the new demands of the business.
• Decreased Oracle licenses from over 3500 to 1250 over a three-year period. John C. Olson Page 2
• Developed self service offerings for all open source offerings cutting down provisioning from weeks to under three minutes for new database requests.
• Built a new Metrics/Measurement pipeline for the corporation enabling us to retire ALL other licensed metric platforms.
• Built a corporate notification/paging solution that we eventually outsourced.
• Built out the Kafka platform as our corporate streaming solution.
• Drove retirement of MFT and MQ.
• Created a caching solution for our stores for important data needed for daily store operations.
• Increasing responsibilities over the years starting with database, adding metrics followed by streaming and file. Target Corporation, Minneapolis, MN June 2008 to February 2011 Senior Group Manager, Compute
Led the compute team supporting the design, build, implementation, and support of Target's Hardware environments for hosting compute and storage across our Data Centers, Stores, and Distribution Centers. Introduced Linux as our primary data center operating system.
• Initiated and implemented Multi-Million Dollar Capital and internal IT projects from inception to completion.
• Moved the needle from needing a new data center to decreasing our data center need through consolidation.
• Introduced Linux as Target’s primary data center operating system. Target Corporation, Minneapolis, MN March 2005 to April 2008 Group Manager, New Facilities for Stores, Distribution Centers and International Sites Accountable for Hardware Implementations at all New Target Stores, Distribution Centers and Headquarters locations.
• Led our largest deployment initiative in the history of Target with over 130 new stores per year & 5 new regional data centers in consecutive years.
• Five new regional data centers in a period of a year and a half.
• Responsible for all technology deployed and stood up in our new HQ India locations and Target Sourcing Services offices.
