The Piikani Investment Corporation’s mandate is to provide prudent and reliable business and management advisory services to the Piikani Nation, Chief, and Council regarding investments, loans and loan guarantees, the operations of the Piikani business entities, and risk management / crisis containment strategies. The focus of PIC's investment activity is Alternative Energy (hydro, wind, photovoltaic and solar), Real Estate Development & Construction, Mining, Aggregates, Ecotourism, Logistics, Consumer Services, Value-Add Agribusinesses (silviculture, aquaculture, plant & protein), and Infrastructure. PIC may invest directly (>$100M in settlement trust funds), as syndication lead, or simply as agent, negotiating arms-length financing. PIC's favoured investment structure is joint venture arrangements with strong commercial partners such as Atco, Fortis, AltaLink, and TransAlta. Jim also serves on the Board of Directors of Lions Bay Holdings, a Vancouver-based Agribusiness consolidator / integrator PEG.
'14 – '15 Cortex Business Solutions Inc., President & CEO Cortex Business Solutions Inc. (TSX: CBX), with offices in Calgary, Toronto, Houston, and Denver, provides eCommerce products and services that improve efficiencies, reduce costs, and streamline procurement and supply chain processes for its customers in both Canada and the USA. Cortex is a global leader in the development and commercialization of Cloud-based SAAS P2P, and AR/AP portal solutions with clients such as Husky Energy, Apache Corp., Calgary Sports and Entertainment, and Caterpillar. Jim was brought in to rationalize the company’s operations, expand its global footprint, and execute an aggressive turnaround strategy that incorporated both organic and transactional growth. In addition, Jim evolved the client focus beyond Cortex’s roots in Energy; and into synergistic industries such as Mining, Construction, Healthcare, and Government.
'06 – '13 Deloitte, Touche & Tamatsu LLP., Partner – Financial Advisory DTT is the largest Professional Services Company in the world at USD50 Billion in annual revenue. Jim led the Calgary Corporate Finance & Transaction Support Services practice focused in the North American mid-cap market. The business activities of Jim’s group included Business Consulting and Strategy Development / Implementation, Advising on Mergers / Acquisition / Divestitures and Reorganizations, Debt and Equity Financings, Valuations and Performance Enhancement. Jim handled all aspects of Business Development & Relationship Management, Transaction Origination, Execution, and Quality Control for a diverse book of clients representing all industries. Jim’s team grew the mid-market practice from 4th place to 1st, surpassing CIBC, E&Y, and MNP. Additionally, Jim represented Deloitte as Coach and Judge for the 50 Best Managed / Fast 15 / Green 15 Programs; and acted as Partner lead for the Financial Advisory Talent and Performance function as well as teaching DT’s proprietary CFO certification program. Finally, Jim served on the Boards of several private, public, and NfP entities including Calgary Economic Development, Association for Corporate Growth, United Way Investment Advisory, and TSX-listed PanTerra Resource Corp.
'99 – '05 Global Thermoelectric Inc., SVP – Business Development & Marketing Global Thermoelectric Inc, (TSX: GLE), is the world leader in the development and commercialization of planar solid-oxide- fuel-cell technology / products / systems for the distributed power, and cogeneration markets, as well as niche automotive applications. After writing the Company’s business plan, Jim’s focus was identifying, structuring, negotiating, and managing strategic alliances with critical technology suppliers, system manufacturers, and distribution partners in each of the Company’s four priority market verticals. These Partners include; DANA Corp. (Ger.), Marubeni (Jap.), AES (Aus.), Kohler Co. (USA), Enbridge Inc. (Can.), Hyundai (Kor.), General Electric (USA), General Motors (USA), and Suburban Propane (USA). In addition, Jim’s team created and managed Global’s competitive intelligence database, managed all government, academic, and industry initiatives, including international lobby groups, investment bankers, valuation and tax advisors, legal council, and PR firms, and implemented Global’s Intellectual Property strategy. Finally, he chaired the Fuel Cells Canada Government Policy Task Force initiative, which was a strategic paper and plan to increase the profile, and accelerate commercialization, of the Canadian fuel cell industry. GLE has been nominated, and has received, several prestigious awards for its leading-edge work, as well as financial infusions from IRAP, NRC, DOE and PERC.
