Employment History

Commissioned Officer, United States Army (1969 – 1980/ 1986-1996)

Night attack combat helicopter pilot (three hostile fire tours-of-duty: Vietnam, Panama, Desert Storm). This involved the use of multiple night-vision optical devices and necessitated sound tactical judgement and careful target discrimination. I was qualified to fly numerous airframe types, to include the Bell Huey (UH-1), Bell Kiowa (OH-58), and Bell Attack Cobra (AH-1S) as well as selected foreign aircraft.

Senior Air Operations Officer for Ecuador earthquake relief (Operation Abrendo Rutas). I was responsible for coordinating all inter-service air support for this operation, to include managing a fleet of C-141 and C-130 aircraft. My efforts resulted in the successful transit of 1,500,000 pounds of cargo and 8,000 emergency personnel between the United States and the Republic of Ecuador within a 90-day period.

Senior In-country Air Operations Officer for Vice-President Dan Quayle (Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Saudi Arabia). I was responsible for all aspects of the Vice-President’s in-country aerial transit during his 1990 Christmas visit to Saudi Arabia. This involved close coordination with the United States Secret Service, pilot and aircraft selection, route planning, airspace deconfliction, and tactical security.

Managing Editor and contributing author: US Army Aviation Officer’s Advanced Course. In this capacity, I acted as the lead editor for all submitted articles and curriculum materials, to include the development of courseware designed to enhance the writing skills of young officer-pilots.

High School teacher, Northern Arizona Navajo Reservation (1980-1986)

,.

Following the Vietnam war, I left the military for six years to teach middle and high school English on the Northern Navajo Reservation in Arizona (before returning to my career in military aviation). I suspect that this experience (working with indigenous students whose primary language was not English) will prove useful in any position involving teaching, tutoring, or editing, especially when working with clients who are non-native English speakers.

Introduced an adult literacy program to benefit the parents of my high school students.

Financial Consultant (2000 – 2010) Series 7-licensed independent stockbroker.

This required mathematical competency and a thorough knowledge of market

dynamics coupled with tact and human relations skills.

Adult Literacy Tutor (2015 – 2019)

For the past four years, I have acted as a volunteer Director and tutor for a community-based adult

literacy program. By designing coursework specific to the needs and skill levels of my adult

students, I successfully raised the reading level of my students by an average of four grade

levels.
