Polymer Operations SABIC Petrokemya

ABS-Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Co Polymer.

ABS Co-Polymer is manufactured by compounding (extrusion) of HRG (High Rubber Graft) Polymer with SAN (Styrene Acrylonitrile) Polymer and some additives.AS is, effectively an impact-modified SAN. In 2018 SABIC owns 4 sites where some or all the ABS products are manufactured. The locations of those facilities are Ottawa, IL(USA),ay St. Louis, MS(USA),Tampico(Mexico), and Jubal ( KSA)

Styrene monomer provides good processibility, rigidity, gloss and surface hardness. Acrylonitrile gives good chemical resistance, heat, tensile strength and surface hardness. Butadiene rubber rings the toughness, impact strength and excellent low temp property retention. The flexibility offered by the use of the three monomer system (A, B and S) has given the specialty of ABS thermoplastic co polymer.

Polybutadiene Latex

The PL process makes a single Poly-butadiene latex product, an emulsion of poly-butadiene rubber in water that is used as a raw material to make resin in the HRG process.

The total annual production is 29667mt with target yield of 99.5%.Three semi batch reactors working with 120 minutes spacing time and design rate of 1.462 MT/HR/Reactor. Three jacketed Latex reactors designed to produce 6.37 batches per day. Each batch cycle is 11.3 hours.

HRG Unit. (High Rubber Graft)

The HRG is designed to produce a single grade of HRG resin from a single grade of PBD latex. The annual production design basis is for 47670 tons of dried resins per year. This translates to an hourly prod rate of 3.339 MT/hr/reactor or 7.227 MT/hr of the final single dryer based on 8000 hours per year, 97% yield, 4 hours batch cycle time and 10% over design. The HRG resin contains 62% polybutadiene that is in the PD latex feed. The remainder is Styrene and Acrylonitrile grafted on the polybutadiene in the reactor and additives. Grafting agent is Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) SAN Unit

The SAN unit consists of two identical continuous line, each capable of producing approx. 7050 kg/r grade 556,576 or 581 SAN pellets or 5024 kg/hr grade 572 SAN pallets. The two lines have a nominal capacity of 95287 MT/yr. SAN bulk polymerization is performed in a single boiling continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) typically operated at 60 to 65% solids. Reactor discharge is 10.8MT/hr out of which 3.78MT/hr of monomer is recovered in the two stage de-vitalization under vacuum. Major Equipment:
