I am a highly innovative, job-focused self-starter with a proven record of accomplishment in the chemical and environmental sciences. I am looking for a challenging position in a technical or scientific discipline that offers an opportunity to excel and use the skills and knowledge I have developed over my many years of analytical and environmental chemistry and research and development experience. I have a strong background in environmental testing and compliance, and chemical research and development. I possess very good computer hardware and software skills and have a natural talent for problem solving. An independent, inventive thinker, I am unafraid to think "out-of-the-box" to seek novel answers to unique problems. My background and skill-set complements a flexible, technically adept and conscientious individual highly motivated for success.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Natural Resources Technician, 4/2009 – Present
Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Coastal Resources Division, 1 Conservation Way, Brunswick, GA 31520
Collect water samples for shellfish and beach water quality monitoring program.
Field Coordinator for the Cooperative Research Program, 7/2006-Current
SC Department of Natural Resources, Marine Resources Division, 217 Fort Johnson Road, Charleston, SC
I worked with commercial and recreational fishermen to monitor activities and progress of grant funded projects or contracts awarded to individuals to collect fisheries related data for the SC Department of Natural Resources. Accompanied fishermen on boats, collected data, observed techniques, taught data collection methods, wrote reports, entered, and analyzed data. I gave presentations on the importance of conservation and fisheries management efforts to support the goal of the Department of Natural Resources, and I offered hands-on public interaction with certain marine species. I supervised commercial fishermen on annual leased shellfish grounds maintenance and did annual shellfish bed assessments. I also served as an unofficial photographer for the agency and many of my photographs have been published. This position was funded by a federal grant that ends soon and will not be re-funded.
Natural Resources Technician, 2/2004-7/2006
SC Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries, Dennis Wildlife Center, Bonneau, SC
I worked on the Diadromous Fish Project surveying the Santee River basin for the endangered Shortnose sturgeon. I used implanted transmitters, gill nets, egg nets, and trawl nets to sample fish population. I measured water quality and stream flow, sorted and identified catch, separated, sized and preserve eggs for identification. I monitored and maintained ultrasonic receivers placed in lakes & streams for passage of radio-implanted fish. I created a database for field observations, wrote technical reports of field observations and summaries of procedures used, including historical stream flow data. I operated boats, worked in adverse weather, and repaired equipment as required. I provided general support to the District Biologist and the St. Stephens fish lift as needed. I transferred to the Marine division when this grant-funded position ended.
Legal Document Examiner, 10/2003-10/2004
Charleston County RMC, 1 Courthouse Square, Charleston, SC
Proofed, scanned and re-proofed legal documents such as plants, wills, mortgages, deeds, etc. Researched and retrieved archived data for the public performing legal or property research. Provided PC computer support to the office and web users and maintained and instructed users in the public computer research room. Used microfiche and other film readers and made copies of documents.
Senior Research Analyst, 6/1985-2/2001
Westvaco Corporation, Charleston Research Center, North Charleston, SC
I provided support to PhD researchers in an industrial research and development laboratory. I synthesized chemicals for applications in special market areas, evaluated production processes to optimize product quality, conducted plant trials prior to new product implementation or for existing product improvement or troubleshooting. I independently developed experimental and analytical procedures, wrote analytical and experimental reports and TMs. I researched online literature for new product applications. I used AA, ICPES, GC, HPLC, GPC, Surface IR, FTIR, Microscopy, Instron, and other instrumentation for chemical analysis. I worked in the polymer chemicals, saturating paper, pulp and paper, and activated carbon technical groups and worked directly in production plants for process development, and chemical pilot plants for product development or process improvements. I served on the Pilot Plant Safety Task Force, the Research Safety Committee, and the Westvaco Rescue Squad. I received an award for "Excellence in Research" and a letter of commendation.

Analytical Chemist, 11/1982-4/1983
General Engineering Laboratories, Charleston SC
I performed chemical and biological testing for the military and private industries, primarily, but not limited to environmental analysis. I used Atomic Absorption, Gas Chromatography, ICPES and other instruments, as well as bench "wet chemistry." I co-wrote the laboratory Procedures and QC manual to maintain DHEC-EPA certification. I tracked samples through the lab, submitted analytical reports, collected samples, and trained and supervised technicians.
Environmental Laboratory Supervisor, 10/1979-11/1982 (and part-time thru 1987)
Bionetics Research, Yemassee, SC

I assisted the Town of Yemassee, SC in maintaining NPDES compliance with their wastewater treatment plant. I performed other chemical and biological analysis as needed for various laboratory animal projects and husbandry, and assisted lab animal scientists with medical and diagnostic procedures on laboratory animals. I cultivated and harvested pathogens in rabbits and performed pregnancy and TB tests on primates.
