PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN

Using CAN Bus To Control A Model Railway System

The primary objective of this project was to control a turntable from a Command Station (PC). The design of the mechanical model comprises of a turntable and a gear arrangement. The control algorithm for the Command Station was realized using VB program. The interface to set up communication between the Command Station and the turntable was established using Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol and developed using Assembly Language. The interface between the Command Station and the mechanical model was successfully established.

Air Variable Capacitors

The already existing model of Parallel Plate Capacitor using two rectangular steel plates one above the other was becoming obsolete due to reasons such as non-linear movement of the plates, inefficiency in maintaining a constant distance between the plates and also the range of capacitance which could be measured was only in the µF range.

A mechanical model was developed. The AIR VARIABLE CAPACITORS had the following features.

A Set of 40 fixed rectangular plates and 39 semi-circular plates which are mounted onto a shaft; alternately arranged.

Angles measured using protractors attached at each side of the equipment as the semi-circular plates were rotated.

Capacitance range improved from 6 µF to 6 Nano Farad at 90 and 15 Nano Farad at 180 .

Accurate measurements and no human error due to the provision of spacers between the plates.

Wireless Station Monitoring System (WSMS)

WSMS is an efficient public transport management system for automatically monitoring and identifying the incoming and outgoing buses in a bus station. Arrival and departure times of each bus is identified and recorded by using RFID transceivers fitted in both the bus and station units for the supervision of the authorities. An audio alarm in the bus alerts the crew, in the event of delayed departure. The WSMS uses an 8-bit CMOS Flash Microcontroller – PIC 16F877 as its CPU. The information about the buses such as number and timings are given to the unit through a matrix keyboard and displayed to the monitor using an intelligent LCD. The receiving module has an in-built Real Time Clock, which monitors the times which can also be programmed from the keyboard.
