Humble beginnings
ABOUT PHILLIP D. SIZEMORE
Music is not my passion...worship is.
A pastor’s son, Phil has a strong musical and ministerial heritage music was always a huge part of his family. “It’s what we did every week,” says Phil. “Growing up in a Southern Baptist pastor’s home, music was with us everywhere we went.”
Recalling his first solo in church at age 7, Phil remembers sitting in the fellowship hall, surrounded by many familiar faces. And old faces. Though the seemingly judgmental eyes of the church elders struck a chord in him, his experience as a young boy would strike an entirely different chord in Phil a chord that would shape every aspect of his life.
Stepping tones
As a freshman at Gardner-Webb University, God called Phil into a ministry of praise. He adopted as his life verse Psalm 40:3, which states, “He put a new song in my mouth...a hymn of praise to our God! Many will see Him and many will fear the Lord!” This verse is the passion of Phil’s heart his vertical passion.
After he graduated from Liberty University, Phil was a successful recoding artist and independent music evangelist for many years. He traveled throughout the Southern Baptist Convention as an independent worship leader where he came into churches to coordinate region-wide crusades and revivals.
Phil continued to develop as a worship pastor in such new church starts as Northside Baptist and Paulding Baptist in Anderson, SC, and Dallas, GA, respectively. With a rich history in and respect for traditional worship and messages of decades past, he was able to develop new strategies to make worship exciting and relatable to a more contemporary crowd and reach people across generations.
While at Northside Baptist, Phil collaborated with other leaders to revolutionize the church community. Under his leadership, the church grew by 1,100 members, moved into a new building and fostered new music programs Phil worked to establish a 100-voice choir and built an orchestral program and music school of the arts from the ground up.
Leaps and bounds
Throughout his ministerial experiences, Phil has maintained and enriched his connections in the Christian music industry to establish a mutually beneficial network of support.
As Worship Pastor at Noonday Church, Phil established the Vertical Passion Band. As a founding member, Phil worked to enrich the church community by providing new ways to thrive in a dynamic environment. Here, he further solidified his dedication to his vertical passion. To strengthen Noonday’s external affairs, Phil worked to secure the band as the featured entertainment for a community-wide event at Piedmont Hospital a great way to reach vastly diverse communities.
To everything, there is a season
In 2000, Phil experienced a life-changing family crisis over which he had little control. And in the best interest of his family, Phil humbled himself and voluntarily withdrew from the ministerial world and the Christian music industry. He transitioned into the mortgage industry, initially to provide stronger financial security for his daughters.
Ever the avid learner, Phil was able to quickly establish himself as a top executive with some of the most premier agencies in the country. As the economy spiraled downward, Phil was able to use his skills as an adaptor to persevere through the tough times; through corporate turnovers and personnel changes, he remained steadfast. Phil struggled along with many of his colleagues deepening his empathy and compassion for those in crisis.
Turning the page
Earlier this year, Phil returned to God’s calling and renewed his commitment to pursuing his vertical passion. Accepting freedom from defining himself through his career, Phil maintained dual careers with Bank of America and as Interim Worship Pastor at First Baptist Church of Alpharetta.
Phil then brought his unique perspective to Sugarhill Church in Buford, GA, where he currently serves as Part-Time Worship Pastor. In the short time he has been at Sugarhill, Phil has collaborated with peers and leaders to enrich the church community and enhance the worship experience.
Two become one
Part of two very different worlds, Phil brings a unique and unparalleled perspective to all he does.
The mortgage and investment industries are ever changing especially in today’s economy. Church communities are likewise wonderfully dynamic and armed with excellent management, adaptation and endurance skills from his time as a mortgage exec, Phil is exceedingly prepared to dive headfirst back into the wonderful world of worship he knows so well.
As he undertakes another transition, Phil is excited about what God has in store. He looks forward to again wholeheartedly pursuing God’s calling on his life: to position and lead people to the Heart of God through worship and through his gifts of leadership and compassion.
After all, as Phil proclaims, music is not my passion...worship is. A committed husband and loving father, Phil lives in Canton, Ga. with Connie his lovely bride of
seven years and their daughters Gracie, 6, and Noelle, 4.
