AMARILLO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT August 2009 – Present
Secondary Teacher – Horace Mann Middle School
Teach a mandatory state required class for 7th graders called Career Connections/Explorations. The class is a semester long class which is broken into 3 6-week periods in which we cover the following: 1st six weeks – aptitude testing, planning for the future and goal setting, topics such as “what do I want to be when I grow up”, the 16 career clusters and beginning to understand and use the www.bridges.com website which is designed for students who are learning about careers/colleges; 2nd six weeks – the focus is centered around personal finance, check writing, and learning to prepare a budget. Students learn teamwork by preparing a budget for a family of four with a partner; and the 3rd six weeks is spent learning about college/universities and the importance of getting a good education by following the education ladder from bottom to top. Students learn how to look for a job after college, how to fill out a job application, how to write a cover letter, how to style a resume, how to answer interview questions and what to wear to the interview. The final project is a face-to-face interview based on a job that the student has picked out for themselves. Throughout the semester I contact a variety of local business people and have them come speak to my classes and share their knowledge of their individual businesses. I also contact local colleges/universities and have them come speak to classes to help students better understand how these types of institutes work and how life changes when you go to college. Our school is a No Excuses University and it is the expectation that all students will be prepared for college after high school. Currently I am teaching about 150 7th graders per semester.
