Biography
Sherry is originally from Sparta, Georgia and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Dramatics/Speech and Dance from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. While there, she studied under Dr. Peter A. Fields and worked with various artists such as Nomalanga “Nomi” Eniafe, Jeff Obafemi Carr, Persephone Felder-Fentress to name a few. Sherry has worked with the Dance Wellness Program under the direction of Gary Galbraith. She danced in Fisk University’s Performing Dance Company, Orchesis, where she received the Judith Jamison Dance Award of Excellence for 4 years of main stage performance, academics and leadership. Through the Black College Dance Exchange (BCDE), Sherry was awarded various scholarships, took master classes with dance companies, and worked with many well known artists. She is a member of the Gospel Music Workshop of America where she has taught and performed with their dance company since 2006. She was one of the first members of the Liturgical Dance Company, PAF Ministries, located in Nashville, TN. She has performed in various theatrical shows including, God’s Trombone, Dream Girls, West Side Story, Smokey Joe’s Café, Gospel at Colonus, and The Black Nativity. She has taught at Nashville School of the Arts and throughout Tennessee. While in Cleveland, Sherry has taught for CWRU’s National Youth Sports Program, worked with Dianne McIntyre for a choreopoem by Ntozake Shangé entitled, Why I Had To Dance, and has performed at Case Western Reserve University in works by James Hansen “Presently Gone”, Sabatino Verlezza “Jaguar”, Heather Koniz “For One Not Forgotten”, DeWitt Cooper III, Jennifer Birou Lakamp, Kelli Sanford-Burgoon “Weeding” and Pascal Rioult “Wien”.
