Specialities

Laser delivery system development Laser cavity design and testing Numerical modeling and optimization Optical elements assembly Beam quality characterization Machine shop fabrication Image acquisition and processing Troubleshooting

Education

Ph.D. in Physics, University of Oregon (U of O), 2010

M.S. in Optics, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences(IPHY), 2004

B.S. in Applied Physics, Beijing University of Technology (BJUT), 2001

Research Experiences

Post-Doctoral Fellow University of California, San Francisco, 12/2010 – present

Imaged blood vessels of mouse embryos and brains with two-photon microscope for the study of vasculogenesis, arteriovenous specification and angiogenesis. Carried out image acquisition and processing.

Accomplishments :

• Played a key role in developing and maintaining a two-photon microscope system,

including optical elements alignment and software control.

• Acquired, processed and analyzed 3D florescent images of mouse embryos and brains.

Graduate Research Assistant U of O, 06/2006 – 11/2010

Measured pair interaction energies of colloidal particles with line optical traps generated via holographic optical tweezers technique. Characterized colloid-surface interactions with reflection interference contrast microscopy.

Accomplishments :

• Independently designed and assembled a holographic optical tweezers system on a conventional inverted microscope, which costs 50% less than similar commercial products with even better stability and usability.

• Developed programs to generate phase-only holograms on a spatial light modulator to shape the wavefront of incident light.

• Created graphical user interface to control the holographic optical tweezers system, acquire images and track colloidal particles.

• Implemented reflection interference contrast microscopy to characterize colloid-surface inter- actions with more effective image analysis methods, which simplify the optical design and reduce the total costs by 50%

Graduate Research Assistant U of O, 06/2005 – 05/2006

Printed circuit board design for diode laser power supplies. Electrical circuits test.

Graduate Research Assistant IPHY, 09/2001 – 07/2004

Constructed infrared, frequency-doubled diode-pumped solid-state lasers. Validated laser performance. Carried out cavity layout design and optimization studies for output power, pulse width and mode shape.

Accomplishments :

• Independently designed and developed a diode-pumped single-frequency CW Nd:YVO4 laser as master oscillator for a laser amplifier system.

• Independently designed and developed a diode-pumped single-frequency Nd:YAG laser with simultaneous active and passive Q-switching.

• Played a key role in designing and developing a high-power blue disk laser with a TEM00 mode as a part of light sources for laser projection display.

• Actively involved in the contruction of optical parametric oscillators and red lasers, including design, optical alignment and testing.

• Designed and mechanically fabricated some optical elements, such as Fabry-Perot etalons and optical oscillators.
