MESSAGE &
PROFESSIONAL ABSTRACT
Engineering is an art; the art of problem solving and manipulating numbers to satisfy real-world applications. The science behind engineering is only used to validate the integrity of such artful design. Structures of great beauty and grandness are such because of the grand artistic minds of its creators. Structures plain in nature are such because they were conceived to meet simple needs. That being said, every engineer brushes his/her canvas with every calculation made, every connection detailed, every material used. The colorful portrait of my career as an engineer began while still attending college.
As a junior level undergraduate student at the University of California, Irvine, I took on a part-time internship at a local geotechnical engineering firm, where I acquired the basic knowledge of how an engineering consulting firm operated. Other valuable experiences gathered from my part-time internship included, slope stability analysis, seismic analysis, foundation analysis, interpreting geotechnical investigation data, and report production. In an effort to diversify my experience, I went on to work for an engineering contractor that installed shoring systems when the internship at the geotechnical engineering firm was completed.
At the new shoring design-build firm, I managed to apply some of the acquired geotechnical knowledge to my new engineering position. As a staff engineer, I was responsible for developing preliminary shoring designs, estimating costs for shoring installation, ordering material to implement shoring construction, review bid packages for potential shoring jobs, and monitor shoring systems for deflections. The shoring engineering job also entailed cost evaluation for structural shotcrete (gunite) installation, which was a service provided by a sister company located in the same office building of the shoring company.
In search of more structural engineering based type of work, I managed to locate a position at a Type-V (residential) construction private consulting firm after leaving the shoring engineering firm. The emphasis at the Type-V company was to provide the clients with designs and drawings of low-rise (1 to 3 stories), wood-framed buildings. The design aspects of the job mainly involved evaluating the structural integrity of wood framing with the occasional design of steel and concrete structures. Preparing sets of calculations for plan check submittals was an integral part of the job. The plan preparation required knowledge of drafting software and tools to visually interpret structural framing schemes and connections into digital drawings.
After gaining some experience in the structural field of civil engineering, I returned to more geotechnical-based work with ATC, working as a Staff Engineer. Under the supervision of my manager, Daya Bettadapura, I was heavily involved projects that required to me to perform on-site soils testing, grading inspections, pile-driving monitoring, soils resistivity testing, and subsurface soils exploration. In addition technical writing and preparation of field reports and soil investigation reports was a common task. However, after only eight months at ATC the company underwent a dramatic re-structuring phase, which compelled me to look else where for a more stable environment.
Since the structural aspects of construction intrigue me the most, took on my current position at Gouvis Engineering as a Project Manager/Field Engineer. I currently take on all field assignment duties, which include structural observations, framing walks, and value engineering walks. I am also the main person called upon to perform forensic investigations regarding issues of structural failures or deficiencies. In the office, the design of light-frame structures is the main focus. I also handle many building department clarifications and design various earth retaining and landscape structures.

SELECTED PROJECT
EXPERIENCE
Geotechnical
Seismic Analysis / Tajiguas Landfill Expansion / Santa Barbara County, CA. Performed site-specific seismic hazard analysis and seismic source evaluation using computer software (FRISKSP & EQFAULT). Modeled various liner systems to optimize waste disposal for landfill expansion design and assisted in civil design to obtain cut and fill quantities for proposed grading of slopes and roadways.
Slope Stability Analysis / Puente Hills Landfill / County of Los Angeles, CA. Evaluation of static and seismic stability of cut and buttress fill slopes using computer software (PCSTABL). Interpretation of grading plans and boring logs for cross-sectional analysis for various proposed slope designs.
Settlement Analysis / Morro Bay Power Plant / San Luis Obispo County, CA. Conducted settlement analysis with using computer software (SETTL/G) for shallow and deep foundations supporting various industrial equipment and storage facilities at proposed power plant.
Slope Stability Analysis / Sycamore Landfill / City of San Diegp, CA. Involved in geotechnical field and laboratory investigation and stability analysis of cut slopes at the landfill site.
Structural
Shoring Design / Capitol Records Gogerty Building Expansion / Hollywood, CA. Involved in bidding process by preparing proposals, scope of work items and cost estimates for potential clients. Prepared preliminary and final cantilevered shoring design for building expansion, which also included drafting construction drawings and submitting plans and calculations for plancheck approval.
Shoring Design / SAAB of Santa Monica–2 Story Addition / Santa Monica, CA. Completed single-row tieback shoring design and plan drafting for basement level of building addition. Other tasks included attending job meetings and ordering material, such as concrete and steel, to facilitate installation of shoring system.
Seismic Retrofit / Camp Roberts / Camp Roberts, CA. Served as structural engineering consultant to provide seismic retrofit for fire sprinkler piping installed in SATCOM warehouse facility in base. Prepared structural drawings and calculations for resulting seismic retrofit design of existing framing members.
Structural Failure Review / Nellis Air-Force Base / Las Vegas, NV. Served as structural engineering consultant to provide forensic investigation of failed fighter jet metal canopy. Conducted on-site investigation and structural analysis in order to provide complete failure review report.
Pile Analysis / El Morro Conversion Project / Laguna Niguel, CA. Evaluated structural integrity of CIDH piles for bridge and building foundations under static conditions. Analyzed degree of settlement and bending of piles using computer software (LPILE) to obtain necessary pile dimensions for an adequate design.
Structural Observation / San Pedro Apartments / Downtown L.A., CA. Performed daily structural observation visits to five story wood framed building atop of concrete podium to satisfy City of Los Angeles building code requirements. Verified installation of framing member including all structural hardware and lateral resisting elements.
Pipe Support Design / IEUA Dewatering Expansion Project / Ontario, CA. Designed anchorage support connections using seismic forces for utility lines installed through out the dewatering facility.
