Manager Prepress - 1994 to 2005
John Henry Company, Lansing, Michigan
Hired in as lead of the Prepress department on second shift. Responsibilities were to oversee the work of nine employees and to make sure camera work, stripping, proofing and plating go through the department on or ahead of schedule as well as filling in at all of those stations when needed. If something broke down I had to fix it or know who to get a hold of to fix it so valuable press time would not be lost. Communicated with customers, planners, coordinators, pressman, other leads and managers to make sure things ran smoothly through the department. Supervised employees.
Became the manager of the entire Prepress Department. The responsibilities became what a lead was times three shifts. Eventually the department was downsized so small that there was not really a reason to have lead or manager.
Went over to Electronic Prepress for about a year. Learned the basics of several computer programs. Returned back to plating. Learned how to run computer to plate "CTP" plate maker in both the sheet fed plate room and also in the flexo plate room. Responsible for taking care of calibrations of the film processors, densitometers and making sure that all calibrations of equipment were kept up-to-date.
Manager of the Prepress Department - 1978 to 1994
Lansing Printing Company, Lansing, Michigan
Hired in as a pressman. Ran several small to medium size presses. Printed letterhead, envelopes, business cards, small publications. Also made plates and proofs for many years. Had some mechanical ability so I maintained film processors, plate processors and did some maintenance on presses. I did quite a bit of scheduling for the pressroom. When a salesperson went on vacation or was on leave of some sort I filled in for them and was able to hold on to a couple of accounts because the customers liked the way I was handling their business. Was taught how to run both a horizontal and vertical camera. Learned how to shoot line copy as well as how to shoot many different kinds of specialized halftones.
I became interested in prepress stripping. Started out with simple one and two color jobs and progressed into four color and multi color stripping. Know all about why "this should be knocked out of the background and why this should overprint, etc."
Became the manager of the Prepress Department. My job was to make sure the jobs went through camera, stripping, proofs, corrections and plates in a timely fashion as well as keeping up on my stripping responsibilities.
