Commander Manuel Mota was born in the Republic of South Africa on the 6th of August 1967. He entered the Portuguese Naval Academy on the 1st of October 1984. He concluded his 5 year bachelor s degree in Naval Military Sciences in 1989.
In 1991 he completed his 1 year specialization course as an Above Water Warfare Officer and in February 1992 he attended the Royal Navy Helicopter Controller s Course, Portland, UK performing these functions on war fighting frigates until 1998.The following 2 years he commanded a fast patrol boat.
Concluding this last tour, he was posted to the Portuguese Naval Command (COMNAV) in Oeiras, Portugal and, as Lieutenant-Commander, headed the Protocol Section of the Intelligence Division and Military Assistant to the Vice-admiral Naval Commander.
From September 2003 and October 2005 he was posted to the NATO Joint Command Lisbon (JCL), Oeiras, Portugal as Logistics Operations and Plans Branch Head. During this period, he attended several courses at the NATO School, Germany namely: the NATO Staff Officers, Host Nation Support (HNS), Multinational Joint Logistics Centre (MJLC) and the Operational Logistics Planning Courses. For the Joint Logistics Course he was an instructor for the MJLC, HNS and Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF) lectures and for the Peace Support Operations (PSO) Course he also was an invited speaker for the NATO Response Force Logistics lecture.
In October 2005 he was posted to the Portuguese Armed Forces Joint War College in Lisbon, Portugal where he taught NATO Operational Planning, Command and Control, Combined Joint Task Force/NATO Response Force (CJTF/NRF) Concepts and Operational Logistics to the several courses that take place at this academic institution.
He was promoted to his current rank on the 31st of October 2005.
In September 2007 he was posted to Allied Command Transformation, Norfolk, VA, USA and for 3 years performed the functions as Lessons Learned (LL) Staff Officer. Participating in many LL activities across the DOTMLPFI spectrum, he performed duties as doctrine developer, instructor and LL capability implementer for Operational Commands, HQ s and Forces deployed to real world operations in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.
Since 14SEP10 he is the Head of Operations Branch of the Plans & Policy Division of the Portuguese Navy Staff, Lisbon, Portugal.
He has attended several other national courses such as the Search and Rescue Operations Officers Course, the Naval Control of Shipping Reporting Officers Course, the Commanding and Executive Officers Training Course, the Portuguese Naval War College General Course and holds a Pre-Masters Certificate in Management of Ports and Maritime Transportation from the Economics and Management Institute of Lisbon, Portugal.
Between 1980/82 he lived and studied in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He is interested in pursuing a career in the US which may be military/defense related that can make good use of his experience in these domains.
