RESEARCH WORK

● Remediation of Mercury by Iron Bio-precipitation (using Micro-Organisms) (Oct. 2009 – June 2010)

Used stagnant waste water as source of Iron bacteria

Prepared Selective media- Citrate Agar

Iron bacteria can use Citrate as sole source of carbon, which helps detection and isolation of Iron bacteria.

Bacteria while precipitating ferric hydroxide, also precipitates out the heavy metal contaminant- Mercury

Precipitated mercury is estimated by using Mercury estimation protocol using a separating funnel

The concentration is read in the UV-Vis Spectrophotometer at 630nm

Studied the effect of variations in Ferric Ammonium Citrate concentration in citrate Agar, incubation period and incubation temperature

Presented optimum conditions for remediation of Mercury

Researched pros and cons of several different methods including chemical oxidation and reduction, ion-exchange, electrochemical treatment and reverse osmosis

Finally concluded that using micro-organisms for remediation of heavy metals like Mercury is cheaper, efficient and eco-friendly

● Assisted a Ph.D student (April 2011-June 2011)

o Learnt how trial and error approach is important in analytical chemistry to get desired rate of reaction

o Used various instruments like GC, amplifier, UV-vis spectroscopy

TECHNICAL SKILLS/INTEREST

• Techniques: Types of plating the media, microbial colony isolation, media formulation, autoclaving, pipetting, pH meter, Illuminometer, centrifuge, HPLC, ELSD, GPC, IC, GC/MS, NMR, FTIR, UV-vis spectroscopy, Liquid Scintillation Counter, Distillation, Gel Electrophoresis, ELISA, PCR, Crystallization, Titration, etc.

• Proficient in Microsoft Professional Office, including Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, Power Point, Publisher; Internet Explorer; Mozilla Firefox; Lotus Notes

ACADEMIC RESEARCH PROJECTS

● Analysis of blood groups

Performed research on hazards of incompatible blood transfusion and possible remedies

o Case studies included Hemolytic disease, Rhesus disease and treatment of ABO incompatibility between mother and fetus

• Proposed alternate transdermal Delivery of Methotrexate

o After researching various alternatives of transdermal drug delivery of Methotrexate, I proposed usage of nanogels, liposomes and transferosome as more effective carrier for Methotrexate delivery

• Studied effect of Dihedral Angle and substituents on Biphenyl

o Using Spartan student, I studied the change in relative energy, solvation energy and Dipole moment

o Results obtained through PM3, MMFF49 and STO-3G was compared and analytical reasoning was included.

o Results for single halogen substituted and double substituted biphenyl were compared with non-substituted biphenyl. Also the comparison was made between results of biphenyl and phenyl ring with cyclohexane as substituent

VOLUNTEER WORK
