QUALIFICATIONS: Electrical engineer with 8 years of certification and testing experience. Established and managed 2 testing laboratories under UL’s Client Test Data program/Data Acceptance Program. Demonstrated the ability to quickly acquire knowledge in new product categories and Standards.
EXPERIENCE: July 2007 – March 2009 Rockwell Automation, Inc. – Arden, NC
SENIOR DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER
Test verification and validation engineer for Industrial Control and Power Conversion equipment. Responsible for verifying compliance of new/revised constructions, assisting design and manufacturing with implementing required revisions, and creating, documenting, and executing test plans. Defined, planned and executed off-site testing. Administered UL testing laboratory under UL’s Data Acceptance Program (DAP).
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• Managed and maintained engineering validation and UL/CE verification and certification for the ArmorStart Distributed Motor Controller product line. These products consisted of various types of communicating motor controllers (variable frequency drives, thyristor-based soft-start controllers, and magnetic motor controllers) packaged into custom IP67/NEMA 4 enclosures with custom electronic circuit boards. Applied following Standards to the product line: UL 508, UL 508C, UL 2237 (subject Standard), EN 60947-1, EN 60947-4-1, EN 60947-4-2, EN 50178, EN 61800-3, and the EN 61000 suite of EMC immunity Standards.
• Developed the validation and certification structure for the Distributed Motor Control Business segment. The structure consisted of the planning, execution and documentation of the validation, verification, and certification testing. Developed data sheets and processes to standardize EN 60947 and EN 61800-3 tests.
• Integral part of design team. Designed and performed tests to verify design solutions. Served as liaison between engineering and certification organizations.
• Identified 13 critical UL tests required for maintaining and modifying the product line. Qualified testing laboratory for these tests under UL’s DAP.
• Strategized and executed off-site UL 508 and EN 60947-4-1 short-circuit evaluation for new product variations. Prepared test plans identifying each required shot with a designated sample and developed alternative plans dependant on test results. (600 VAC, 1 kA – 65 kA, fuses/circuit breakers).
• Scheduled, planned, and executed the immunity and emissions testing, both in-house and off-site. Defined appropriate test levels (Class A, Group 1).
Conducted ESD, EFT, Surge on-site. Conducted and Radiated Emissions and Immunity tests performed at third party testing laboratory. Assessed schedule test time and devised the most efficient test strategy. Supported third party laboratory with test setup and operation.
• Planned, executed, and documented the Low-Voltage Directive testing according to EN 60947-1. Developed the required impulse voltage withstand voltage testing based on functional insulation and protective separation as defined by the Standard.
• Provided training to laboratory technician on how to setup and conduct tests and document the results.
• Identified representative samples and collaborated with design and manufacturing in acquiring samples required for evaluation.
• Reviewed UL 508C proposal generated to permit the “Suitable for group motor installations” markings for drives. Proposed revisions to clarify requirements and to align the language and structure with that of the existing Standard.
October 2005 – June 2007 Quoizel Inc. – Goose Creek, SC
UL ENGINEER
Product Compliance Engineering for luminaires and portable luminaires. Responsible for establishing and maintaining UL/cUL compliance for the entire catalog of products and managing testing laboratory under UL’s Client Test Data Program (CTDP). Provided technical expertise for Standards (primarily UL 1598 and UL 153).
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• For 5 upcoming market releases, identified products requiring testing and/or construction revisions in accordance with the appropriate compliance Standards. Determined which products in releases were deemed represented by already existing UL product descriptions.
• Assisted design and manufacturing in implementation of all necessary revisions to constructions arising from issues with compliance.
• Set up testing laboratory and qualified the laboratory as an UL certified testing laboratory under UL's CTDP.
• Operated the CTDP testing laboratory including: preparing test methods and datasheets; performing all required tests; interpreting test results; determining which additional products are represented by the tests; maintaining all required documentation; and ensuring that all test equipment is calibrated and functioning properly.
• Prepared UL procedures and test records for the products and submitted all required information and samples to UL for evaluation. Structured product descriptions to permit greatest flexibility in product coverage.
• Resolved Variation Notices issued by UL for existing products.
• Conducted testing to establish comparison with competitor’s products.
• Developed and executed test plan for proposed solution to limit of torchiere lamps to a maximum of 190 W as required by the federal Energy Policy and Conservation Act. Assisted manufacturer in completing UL evaluation of the device to permit its use with products prior to the upcoming deadline for implementation. Provided continuing assistance on variations of the solution.
