Huntsman, Process Engineer – Alkyl Carbonates, Alkylmorpholine; Miscellaneous Amine Units April 2010 – Current

Responsibilities & Duties

• Technical expert for day-to-day operations, start-up, shut-down, and turnaround of units. Requires close coordination with Production Supervisor, maintenance, construction, management and the business team.

• Manage raw materials, off streams, and waste from production units.

• Develop quantitative metrics to analyze unit performance, report deviations, and pursue value added projects

• Identify cost savings opportunities, and present them to management for implementation

• Assist R&D with plant trials, and introduction of new products into covered units

• Participate in LOPA’s, RCA’s, HAZOP’s, etc. (attended Apollo RCA course)

• Initiate MOC’s and engineering packages for capital (and non-capital) projects. Follow them through to completion.

• Identify opportunities to improve product quality, reduce waste, save energy, and improve equipment reliability

• Assist operations with production upsets and minimizing downtime due to mechanical failures

• Apply PSM guidelines and best practices to achieve operational excellence.

Projects

Correct design flaw on tower vacuum jet KO pot by adding additional controls and venting vessel to low pressure flare.

Double shipping capacity of polyol intermediate. In construction phase. $280,000 budget approved.

Plant representative for propylene oxide truck carrier switch. Ensure new trailers met company and plant specifications. Informed corporate of plant limitations and requirements.

Monsanto, Process Engineer co-op – Glyphosate Intermediate Units June 2009 – March 2010

Responsibilities & Duties

• Raw material management on rail car unloads.

• Monitor unit performance. Analyze process trends and lab data for deviations

• Maintenance of unit's DCS. Code clean-up, controller tuning, and nuisance alarms reduction

• Project management. Coordinate planning and operations tasks. Define scope and requirements. Clarify objectives and expectations to all involved. Follow up with results and action items. Consult with ES&H during the define phase.

• Operator training, DCS configuration, startup and operations support for Ion Exchange pilot plant.

Projects

Reduce DSIDA assay variation by implementing a new equation to calculate feedstock water concentration. Improved quality of raw material to reactors. Reduction of variation is observed through less noise in analytical lab data, and Six Sigma analysis.

Steam trap audit of two units, tank farm, and railcar unloading/loading areas. Results found cost savings through piping rearranging, steam trap replacement, and maintenance. Implemented a new PM procedure.

Co-Managed ion exchange pilot plant by working closely with process engineer, R&D, and corporate. Corrected “as-built” errors, and fixed shortcomings in final design. Optimized run conditions to achieve results similar to laboratory.
