• Responsibilities for the position of Production Engineer I included continuous process optimization, data analysis for daily operations/raw material reviews, trouble shooting, providing guidance to operations on process parameter adjustments, and process improvement project work for the Brine/Bromine operations. Work conducted consisted of the following: establishment of operating set points for optimum efficiency and reduced production costs for Bromine Towers, steam usage analysis and identification of improvement areas, construction of PI overview pages for increased visibility in operational areas where DCS was not utilized (steam usage throughout plant, Bromine tank levels throughout plant), development of raw material usage calculation pages for display in control rooms, energy savings project associated with recycled heat from tailbrine stream (addition of titanium heat exchanger) for cooled scrubber brine stream, and replacement/installation of chemical feed pump for anti-scaling chemical utilized in the protection of tailbrine lines, pH probes, and boiler feed water exchanger.

• Process Engineer: Provided technical support: data analysis, process improvement, project and optimization work in the Pulp/Bleach/Woodyard Areas, Utilities Area

A. Pulp Mill/Woodyard: Responsible for providing process engineering support to the Pulp/Bleach and Woodyard areas. Worked with area operations to identify and implement process improvements and small project work such as building protective containment over hydraulic units near the log line, getting a hopper for excess bark in the Woodyard, valve sizing and installation on trim water lines for bleach plant, gathered and collected data on boil out options to reduce Barium Sulfate in washer drums, piping replacements, etc. Analyzed downtime in Pulp/Bleach area and worked with maintenance, operations, and area management to identify root cause and implement corrective measures. Responsible for conducting area equipment audits such as annual ClO2 generator inspections and working with contractors and maintenance personnel to correct identified issues prior to start up; responsible for completion of Pre Start Up Safety Reviews, safe work permitting, and other documentation associated with equipment inspections. Responsible for “communication to affected employees” for each process change and administering training as necessary.

B. Utilities: Responsible for monitoring and collecting data for pilot Reverse Osmosis system in the Power and Steam area of Utilities. Responsible for optimizing performance and conducting trials in the water treatment area and monitoring boiler feed water system. Improvement projects include the coordination of resin cleaning, ordering and overseeing resin replacement, Reverse Osmosis unit to replace Demineralizers, and installation of neutralization tank in boiler feed water plant. Estimated annual savings associated with chemical change and resin cleaning approximately $ 300,000; annual savings associated with RO project $ 2 million

• Chemical Process Safety Coordinator: Responsible for managing and implementing the CPS Program at the facility and ensuring that all identified systems are appropriately covered under the fourteen elements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910. Collected Process Safety Information and participated in initial PHAs for the following systems: SOG, HCl, H2SO4 and implemented the revalidation of Turpentine, NCG, and Chlorine. Acted as chair of the Steering Committee, which is composed of area management and operators, and is responsible for making decisions regarding Chemical Process Safety. Established centralized location, CPS Library (hardcopy) CPS Drive (electronic), for all covered system documentation to ensure the information is readily accessible to all employees. Conducted mill wide CPS General Awareness Training, Management of Change Training, and Incident Investigation/TRAX Application training to approximately 1800 employees on annual basis. Provided new employee training detailing PSM chemical processes in each area of the facility to new and transfer hourly and salaried individuals. Conducted on going training as necessary for process improvements conducted via Management of Change procedures in operation areas. Responsible for tracking CPS action items to completion and submitting quarterly reports on the status of our CPS program.

• Environmental Health & Safety: Responsible for completion of a filtering system for FPI (Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection) system, annual facility Toxic Chemical Inventory Report (SARA III), and wastewater composition testing and monitoring.

• Utilities: Worked in the Power/Steam (Utility) area; responsible for generating annual/monthly production reports and cost analyses; worked closely with process engineers on various area improvement projects; extensively worked with Excel and was introduced to PI Process Book.

• Technical Services: Carried out Lab Technician responsibilities in the Utility area, performed various composition tests on products generated in specified area, analyzed and entered test results in PI system.

• Environmental Department: Responsible for reviewing and amending our departments Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) Plan as well as implementing (SPCC) improvements mill wide in preparation for upcoming audit.

• Safety: Participated in “Down Days” for 10R, one of the three recovery boilers; learned Lock-Out Tag-Out, confined space entry, and air quality (sniffing) procedures. Represented the Technical Services department in the annual Safety fair, during which I was responsible for giving a presentation on Asbestos, Lead, and Radiation safety to various groups of employees.
