Career History

February 2008 – Present South Tyneside College

South Tyneside College (STC) is a large tertiary college with an estate of over 55,000m2. STC is undergoing an exciting phase of its development and embarking on a major rationalisation of their property strategy. The vision is to create state of the art education facilities for the people of South Tyneside and beyond.

Responsibilities:

• Director of Estates reporting to the College’s Senior Management Team (SMT) responsible for the College’s major buildings related projects including managing all aspects of capital projects during pre-contract, contract and post-contract stages.

• Represent the College in all respects relating to the estate, including liaison with external parties, design teams, contractors, sub-contractors, consultants, statutory bodies and other key stakeholders.

• Reporting on a regular basis to the Board, the Principal, and SMT.

• At all times monitor the Estates and Facilities functions to achieve best value for money and efficiency.

Achievements:

• Obtained approval in principal for a 102 million capital project in 2008.

• Successfully led 102 million capital scheme from feasibility to contract award.

• Successful obtained additional funding for further improvement works.

• Rationalised and reduced estates costs and improved service delivery.

June 2004 - January 2008 Kajima Partnerships Ltd (KPL)

Achievements:

• Darlington Schools successful in the 2007 PFI awards under the category of operational project with the best design

• Appointed Director of two PFI companies in 2007.

• Successful mobilisation and set up of Kajima Northern Regional Office

• Ensured successful transition from Construction to Operations an all projects.

January 2004 – June 2004 Project Manager, Turner and Townsend

Achievements:

• Part of the team, which successfully achieved financial close on the Newcastle and North Tyneside Lift Project.

• Successfully brought additional income into the business.

October 2000 – January 2004 - Contracts Controller, Criterion Healthcare

Achievements:

• Successful completion of the 67 million pound, 340-bed hospital ahead of schedule and within budget

• Produced and developed a programme using Microsoft Project of key tasks, deliverables and contractual requirements, which covered the whole of the PFI contract period.

• Ensured FM operations started up efficiently with zero deductions throughout the operations period.

September 1982 – October 2000 Facilities Manager, PSA/Aqumen Services Ltd

Achievements:

• Instrumental in setting up a new methodology of working with our Client, which was awarded Customer Service Initiative of the year at the BIFM, awards 2001.

• Following privatisation earned design income in excess of £500K per annum.

• During this time successfully completed BSc (Hons) degree studying with the Open University in my own time and within 4 years

Outside Interests

Jim is a lifelong supporter of Newcastle United Football Club. He plays 5 a side football. He enjoys listening to and playing music and also enjoys organising and planning foreign holidays. For relaxation he cooks especially Oriental and Indian Dishes.
