Boatswain’s Mate / Search & Rescue Swimmer 6/02 to 10/10
The Boatswain’s Mate is an all around seaman whose duties are many and varied. Duties include, but are not limited to: responsibility for serving as a team leader; continued maintenance and operational readiness of all deck equipment assigned, as well as tools and specialized gear; and for performing general maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of material, equipment and deck department areas. May also served as a ship’s rigger and was in command of a lifeboat/life raft during an emergency. When assigned to an underway replenishment vessel, I was in charge of an unrep rig team. I was assigned to rigging, sending and receiving the various types of standard tensioned replenishment alongside methods (STREAM), including but not limited to star, traveling surf, single/double probe fuel rigs, and 2 1/2 inch astern refueling rigs. As an unrep rig captain, ensures rig team is in uniform and outfitted with the proper safety equipment. I was responsible for the training and the safety of my rig team. For Vertrep operations, I would assign my team to net and stage cargo, and trained everyone to be familiar with SWL loads of helo pendants, legs, and weight limitations of various types of helicopters. I was my job to be familiar with all approved safety procedures involving the movement, stowage, loading, and discharging of cargo. When assigned to ammunition ship, I had to be familiar with ammunition handling procedures, classification of ammunition, stowage and safety. I was able to operate material handling equipment such (MHE) Forklifts, side loader and pallet jacks as well a train and certify anyone who needed training.
As a Force Protection Leader aboard an Ammo ship I was also in charge of the Reaction Force. I was trained to lead a Team of 8 in to a close quarter combat situations to secure any threat. I was assigned to clear and sweep the ship as well as all the ammo & cargo hold during all security situations.
