As a High School English Teacher I`ve used the following lenses to examine works of literature: characterization, setting, theme, point of view, metaphor, simile, symbolism, imagery, allegory and motif; and employed the following writing strategies: brainstorming, pre-writing, graphic organizers, outlines, visual outlines, character maps, collaborating with peers on group projects and editing/revision. These strategies were used to achieve the following goals: to refine basic mechanical errors and language use including issues in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling word omissions, and word redundancy; to understand the components, organization, and purpose of body paragraph structure; to write precise topic sentences; to properly identify, integrate, and explain appropriate supporting evidence (quote, detail, fact, or example); and to write essays with a developed and structured introduction, with relevant background, clear thesis, appropriate preview points, topic sentences, transition sentences, central arguments and controlling ideas.
