During my time as a researcher at NOAA, I worked in three main areas:
Shipboard Scientist - 2008 ORCWALE Marine Mammal Survey aboard the NOAA Research Vessel McArthur II. Marine mammal observer duties included identification and documentation of marine mammals, also use of “big eye” binoculars. Additional duties included operation of the IKMT midwater trawl, collection of oceanographic data, assisting with biopsying efforts, and working at sea for an extended period of time.

Marine Turtle Biology and Ecological Assessment Group - I studied the habitat use of Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Southern California. I maintained an acoustical receiver array, accurately record scientific data, and collect samples of benthic flora and fauna. My responsibilities included; capture, tagging, weighing, measuring of the turtles, as well as assisting with lavage, blood, and tissue sampling from green turtles weighing up to 500lbs. Marine Mammal Stranding Network - My experience includes measuring and collecting tissue samples, assisting with necropsies, and recovery and handling of marine mammals to determine cause of stranding.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Captain - I was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the 80’, (93 GT) SOLAS rated vessel Horizon from the Channel Islands to Baja California, Mexico, and for the operation and maintenance of the Ocean Odyssey, an 85’, (99GT) diving and fishing vessel. Trips ranged from 3 days to 7 days in length.
Shark Wrangler - I was responsible for the management of great white sharks to safeguard divers during shark dives at Guadalupe Island Mexico.
Divemaster - I would oversee all safety aspects of scuba diving operations. Inspection of air tanks, hookah systems, repair of scuba equipment.
Marine Science Instructor - I taught Marine Science curriculum for San Diego County Office of Education program. I deployed and recovered otter trawl net, sediment sampler, biological dredge, and plankton nets.
