Urease enzyme has been immobilized onto silicon microchannels. The substrate utilized was urease, which hydrolyzes urea to ammonia. 1, 10, 20, and 40 layers of enzyme were tested on 100, 200 µm reactors, 100 µm resulted in higher performance when normalized versus the surface area. 40, 250 µm deep reactors without microchannels were tested to determine the contribution of the inlet and outlet manifolds. The very low performance of these reactors indicated that the contribution of area in the inlet and outlet manifolds could be ignored. A variety of reactor designs were tested to ensure even flow distribution. The reactors were mass transfer limited at the 40 layer architectures.
