Senior Applications Designer/Technical Support Specialist

Extensive work with midrange iSeries (AS/400) and distributed processing systems, relocation of several AS/400s, work as an AS/400 Systems Programmer, DB2 database designer, installation and administration of several Local Area Networks (LANs) and the design and development of many application systems written using Control Language (CL), RPG and COBOL for the AS/400. Designed and developed several LAN based/stand-alone Visual Basic applications drawing their data from Btrieve, Microsoft Access, DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, standard DOS files or any combination of the above. As an independent consultant, performed analysis of existing AS/400 based RPG III source code and creation of additional editing for data entered in related display screens.

North Star Aerospace (Aerospace Manufacturer) 02/2007 – 05/2009

As an independent consultant, performed analysis of existing AS/400 RPG and RPGLE source code, AS/400 Control Language Programs and other objects. Aided in the ongoing support of RF based time clocks distributed around the manufacturing facility. Designed and developed new applications. Configured and programmed 802.11 based Intermec CK3 Mobile Computer and Intermec Mobile Label Printers. Provided ongoing technical support of AS/400 operations.

Walgreens (Pharmacy Chain) 10/2005 – 10/2006

Working as an independent consultant, analyzed existing AS/400 based COBOL source code, AS/400 Control Language Programs and COOL:2E Functions. Also supported less experienced consultants and staff members, however, most time was spent designing and documenting new software requirements.

SXC Health Solutions, Inc.(Adjudicator of Pharmaceutical Claims) 05/2002 – 09/2005

As a full time employee, position required configuration and maintenance of an AS/400 based EXTOL EDI Translator, creation of AS/400 based applications and DB2 databases to support automatic translation and transmission of EDI files, troubleshooting COBOL, CL and Sign-on (COOL-2E) programs, in addition to some work with internet servers and intermediate and high level technical support.

BGM/USA (Sales Office) 05/2001 & 02/2002

As a consultant, installed and implemented new equipment for a small sales office.

Saint Gobain Containers (AKA: Ball Glass – Manufacturer of bottles and Jars) 03/2001 – 06/2001

Hired as an independent consultant, project required the evaluation and modification of existing COBOL based AS/400 application software, existing display screens using DDS (including screens incorporating subfiles), modification of existing databases and updating online cursor sensitive documentation. Also required ongoing interface with consultant staff implementing server based portion of project.

Boise Cascade Office Products (Office Products arm of Boise Cascade) 06/2000 – 01/2001

As a member of a team of consultants, worked on creating an AS/400 based Sales Staff Compensation System (and its supporting DB2 database files) for a major manufacturer and marketer of office products. Once coding was complete, worked as a technical advisor to the Quality Assurance team testing both the AS/400 and server based portion of the application produced.

Clinical Foods Manufacturer (Manufactured Special Foods for the Sick) 04/1998 – 03/2000

As a consultant, worked on the analysis and selection of Mainframe file records using EasyTrieve Plus. Creation of software (using COBOL, AS/400 Control Language, Microsoft ACCESS, AS/400 Query and AS/400 SQL) to examine, reformat, sequence and summarize files. Creation and modification of Mainframe JCL. Creation of software to convert, migrate and combine existing files using COBOL, AS/400 Control Language, Microsoft ACCESS, AS/400 Query and AS/400 SQL.

Internet Retailer (Developing a Internet Store for Sales related merchandise) 12/1999 – 02/2000

Working as a consultant, reworked and enhanced AS/400 DDS Printer files. Retrofit functionality and formatting into existing AS/400 COBOL programs. Debugged existing code. Added functionality to existing applications. Reworked AS/400 CL programs to work with reformatted and reworked COBOL programs.

Commercial Container Manufacturer (Manufactured cardboard boxes, etc.) 11/1997 – 04/1998

As a consultant, performed surveys of existing AS/400 computer locations to determine the current physical configuration of the installation. Survey included listing of existing AS/400 vendor software and determination of whether software upgrades were required. Developed and executed plans to move existing AS/400s or transfer their functionality to replacement systems.

Kraft Foods (Manufacturer of bulk and prepackaged foods) 12/1996 – 10/1997

As a consultant for a large manufacturer of packaged and bulk food products, worked on a owned/leased network of over 50 medium to large AS/400 midrange computers. AS/400s shared networking facilities with each other, microcomputers and large mainframe systems. AS/400 were also occasionally networked in with computers outside of the common network. Performed ongoing technical support for existing AS/400 operating systems and installed and configured newly acquired AS/400 systems.

Wholesale Travel Agency (Arranged Charter Air Travel) 07/1996 - 09/1996

Worked as an independent consultant for a company owned and operated by a wholesale vendor of package vacations, the consulting firm marketed and made custom modifications to an AS/400 application developed by the Wholesale Travel Agency that booked air travel, hotels and car rentals (among other options) via Apollo/Sabre and hotel booking systems. Also modified an existing Visual Basic application that controlled credit card transactions for the company.

Scheyer-Austin Ltd. (a consulting firm) 07/1993 - 07/1996

Working for Scheyer-Austin as a staff consultant, spent time at client companies designing and developing applications and providing technical support for software and hardware employing COBOL, AS/400, PCs, Visual Basic, DB2 Databases, DDS, etc.
