Dissertation: Thermal fracture of homogeneous and functionally graded ceramics with multiple surface cracks
> Developed fracture mechanics models for cracked ceramics and functionally graded ceramics subjected to thermal shocks and mechanical loading
> Solved the thermal fracture problems semi-analytically for the fracture behaviors using the integral equation method
> Performed FEA to validate the developed models and methods
> Evaluated the effects of material property gradation and crack morphology on the thermal shock resistance and damage tolerance
> Provided recommendations for improving performace of engineering ceramcis
Project: Fracture Aperture for Wellbore Strengthening Application
> Performed detailed FEA to evaluate the aperture of two fractures of a wellbore in a shale formation subjected to a uniform wellbore pressure and remote in-situ stresses
> Derived an approximate, closed form solution for the crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) based on a dimensional analysis and the superposition principle of linear elastic fracture mechanics
> Validated the obtained closed-form approximation by further finite element CMOD solutions to find the applicable range of the closed-form approximation
Project: Pore Pressure and Chemical Stresses around a Borehole in a Shale Formation
> Investigated pore pressure and stresses around a borehole in a chemo-thermo-poroelastic shale formation subjected to a uniform pressure of a chemically active drilling fluid.
> Obtained closed-form solutions and the corresponding asymptotic (nondimensional) short time solutions of solute concentration, pore pressure, and stresses using a coupled chemo-poroelastic theory
* M.S. 09/2002 - 06/2005, Department of Mechanical Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, China
Thesis: Numerical Simulation of the Dynamic and Thermo-Stresses in Coke-Drum
> Developed various linear/nonlinear FEA models for stress, deformation and fatigue analysis of a coke-drum
> Conducted elastic and elasto-plastic FEA for both real operating conditions and proposed faster operating conditions using FEA software
> Provided recommendation for improving design, process procedure, and failure analysis of coke-drum
Projects: Stress Analysis of Laminated Composite Plates
> Developed higher order FEA models for the investigation of transverse shear stresses for laminated composite plates subjected to thermal loading
> Computed the numerical results by FEM (Fortran) based on the Reissner-Mindlin type globle displacement field and predictor-corrector method
> Validated the developed methods by comparing the results with a 3-D solutions
