Project Work
Server consolidation – In this initiative, I lead a project to optimize the hardware allocation by server consolidation. This was achieved by using 64 Bit Architecture, New multi core (Dual and Quad) processors, Server Virtualization. The overall goal of the project was to reduce the number of servers by 50% or more. The net savings expected was around 1 million dollars which includes cost saving in hardware, support, maintenance, power and cooling, Software Licensing and other over heads like Disaster Recovery. Usage of third party product like CiRBA or IBM NDAT for identifying consolidation candidates.
Storage Consolidation – In this initiative, I lead a project to optimize the storage system by better provisioning techniques like Thin provisioning or better capacity planning and forecasting. This should help to consolidate lots of direct attached storages or on board disks to a NAS (for file systems) or SAN (for high performance Databases) to allow easy and centralized management. Achieving cost optimization by identifying the best combination of RAID levels, SATA or SCSI drives and Tiered storage configuration and Fiber Channel (FC) Vs iSCSI SAN systems.
64 Bit system Architecture – In this initiative, I presented a detailed report which includes the market study of 64 bit processors available in market for windows based system and present the best possible options for various architectures. For ex: Itanium (EPIC) systems for Scale up Vs AMD optron/ Intel Xeon systems for scale out architectures. This initiative should bring organization on 64 bit system architecture for improved hardware utilization, linear scalability and performance. Defining guide lines for the best utilization of multicore technology which includes guide lines around multi threading and thread optimization. Increased RAM will help in other organizational initiatives like centralized dynamic data caching.
Migration to SQL Server 2005 – In this initiative, I lead a project to upgrade existing SQL Server 2000 systems to SQL Server 2005 for cost saving, better hardware utilization, scalability and high availability. This will than be used for better application data caching using dynamic caching technologies provided by SQL Server 2005 notification services and ASP Dot Net 2.0 SQL Cache dependencies. Usage of third party caching appliances like Gear6.
Enterprise Data warehousing (EDW) and BI – In this initiative I designed and implemented EDW system to provide improved data analysis and support smart decision making based on real data. The EDW will help organization grow to the next level by providing business critical information from hidden data. SQL Server 2005, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Microsoft BI Stack (Pro-clarity), MS Office 2007, Share Point server 2007 and SQL Server Reporting services will be used to provide integrated real time reporting and controlled centralized web based data access.
