'Personalization by Pieces'

PbyP is essentially a learning tool and all users in PbyP are learners primarily. Learners are likely to be members of numerous institutions and may have different roles in each. For example a learner may be an administrator of a school but at the same time enrolled in an adult learning class as a pupil in another institution.

If I am a learner in a school and the school buys resources, these resources will be passed to me as a learner so that if I then change schools I can still access the resources even if my new school has not bought them. Hence I inherit rights as a result of my association with a school rather than being a member exclusively of an institution

The core data held on each learner is their name, surname, username, password, date of birth, gender, key mentor, UPN (unique pupil number) or any other unique system used in a country for dealing with identity management for when learners change schools etc.

A number of tables will record links to each user including the schools or institutions they have been part of, the resources and ladders associated with them etc.

It is a fundamental principle of PbyP that learners should be provided with all of the tools they need to allow them to take control of their own learning. The summary data and monitoring that takes place in PbyP is not intended to be used as a league table of schools, it is purely so that those around the learner can offer advice and support.
