Academic Projects

Query Expansion

• Goal of this project is to reformulate queries to improve performance as well as the quality of search results.

• Gathered query logs from ‘CiteseerX’ which is a public search engine. The central idea of this method is to group the query terms based on session IDs in order to get the context. Then semantics of the query terms are obtained from WordNet and ranked by calculating the similarity using Edit Distance. These ranked terms are used to expand the query to achieve better search results.

Prediction of Gold Prices

• This project predicts future gold prices using data mining algorithms.

• Collected attributes that influence gold prices like dollar value, interest rate, inflation rate and used prediction algorithms like regression trees, K-Nearest Neighbor in ‘WEKA’ to predict the gold prices.

Classification of Secure and Vulnerable Companies

• Goal of this project is to help users make investment desicion on companies that are secure or vulnerable based on Standard & Poor ratings.

• Obtained various attributes like market cap, 52 week price change, gross margin, 52 year revenue growth rate using Google Finance. Processed the information with issuer level credit ratings obtained from Fact Set solution.

• Performed classification of entities using algorithms like Classification Tree, Naïve Bayes, and Logistic Regression in ‘xlminer’.

Record Retrieval System

• A web application which helps registered users to upload files and manage them. The files are uploaded to a central server.

• Application features include user registration, user authentication, file upload and tag, search by tag/file name, download, and delete files.

Environment: Java, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSP and Java Servlets, Oracle, Tomcat webserver.

Consultancy Management System

• Designed a database for a consulting firm to manage projects and resources. The firm hires employees and assigns them to various projects with their clients. The database stores information to manage employee details, skills, job assignments, training, promotions and resource management.

• Tasks involved identifying and capturing entities and their relationships in an ER diagram, converting them to tables, applying normalization, and writing SQL queries to retrieve data.

• Involved writing complex SQL queries for matching open job’s mandatory and optional requirements with employee skills, retrieve promoted employees on a given date.
