Objective:
Seeking a challenge in hands-on software engineering management.
Education:
•
•
•
•
Ph.D. in Computer Science, University of Hagen, Germany, 1999, Thesis:
“Generating and Matching Profiles in Large Scale Webcasting Systems”, graduated
with summa cum laude
BS in Economics, University of Hagen, Germany, 1997
MS in Computer Science, University of Hagen, Germany, GPA: 4.0, 1996
BS in Computer Science, University of Hagen, Germany, 1993
Professional Experience:
• Aug 2010 – present: Director of Engineering at Coupons Inc.
Led the consumer product development of company’s web properties with 10 Million
monthly users, including coupons.com, mobile apps (GroceryIQ.com), Facebook apps,
affiliate program (brandcaster.com) and the premium membership product
(couponsavingsclub.com).
- Re-architected the web application stack with cutting edge technologies while
continuing to deliver high quality of service. Delivered a re-designed website
(LAMP, Varnish, Memcached, A/B testing, colo redundancy) and improved the
page-load time by 10x.
- Grew the team from 5 to 40 engineers including the hiring of 5 hands-on
managers, managed performance objectives.
- Evaluate and decide on new technology solutions for the development and
production systems, for example MongoDB.
- Developed intellectual property and proposed 6 patent applications.
- Initiated and organized the first two Hack Days for the company with
overwhelming participation (50 developers/teams each event), productized the
winning Hacks.
- Hands-on development for critical production issues and operational problems.
• Nov 1998 – Aug 2010: Sr. Engineering Manager at Yahoo! Inc.
- Delivered Monitoring tools that cover systems monitoring, availability testing
and end-user performance measurements (developer.yahoo.com/yslow). The
team earned the “You Rock” award for innovation and flawless delivery.
Technology stack was LAMP and sharded MySQL.
- Led the design and development of a new Web Reputation Platform. The
challenges included the scale of the system to handle an overwhelming inflow of
user contributions. The reputation platform was used to assess email spam scores
and determining which users are more trustworthy than others.
- Architected and designed a Web property for personalized content delivery
(alerts.yahoo.com). The system serves over 8 Million users.

•
Apr 1996 – Oct 1998: Staff Software Engineer at IBM Almaden Research Center
- Led the development of a large-scale Webcasting system in Java, which allows
fine-grained, personalized content delivery in a variety of data formats. The
system was deployed on IBM’s developerWorks site (www.ibm.com/java).
- Led an engineering team of 3 developers to build a Web application in Java to
operate a scanning tunneling microscope over the Internet.
