BI Architect Summary

As a senior member of the BI team at Client Site, I was involved in all aspects of providing BI needs of the company. As a BI manager, my responsibility was to deliver a function BI system to the company and that involved in integration of BI tools, expertise, software, practices, along with project management.

I was responsible for evaluation and selection of BI software and tools for the company. As an architect, I completely designed and built the data warehouse system that fulfilled the needs of the company. The total BI team consisted of 3 members including myself. The company’s needs were fulfilled in little over two years timeframe.

First, at team of subject matter experts were assembled to conduct a company wide preliminary survey of BI needs by all of the major departments of the company. Simultaneously my team and I analyzed the various pieces of information that came into the company and also the elements that left the company. This information was organized and through a series of meetings and negotiations, a final data warehouse model was prepared and approved for implementation.

Our team embarked on the next task of reviewing the processes of each department with a view to streamline the process of data accumulation and redesigning of major IT application systems to better suit the needs of the data warehouse and BI teams. This contributed significantly to the performance of the data warehouse. The major IT applications that were modified were (1) Sales and Marketing, (2) CRM – Customer Relationship Management system, (3) Finance (4) Inventory and Warehouse Management systems, (5) Risk management systems (6) Other names of departments where this occurred.

Thereafter the data modeling was undertaken incorporating all the key elements of the business. Initially our team used Erwin (Entity Relationship Diagramming tool) for establishing the base normalized structure of data and later it was converted to a physical model used in dimensional modeling/OLAP modeling. Once the framework was completely designed, the team moved over to the task of designing meta data for each individual department’s needs.

The next task our team handled was the design of the meta data model This model was designed in consultation, negotiation and the requirements as dictated by the Business Managers of various departments.

The next task was the transformer modeling which designed the cubes for aggregation of information as desired /required by the business units.

Our team heavily relied on Cognos ETL process using Cognos Data Manager. Our Data warehouse captured data from (flat files, excel work sheets, I-Series – DB2, and Ms-Access DB, Oracle DB, Sql-Server 2008)

Finally, the data warehouse was designed and built to provide a single unified repository of data for the needs of Sales and Marketing and Distribution Units of the company. Our team relied heavily on Cognos ETL process using Cognos data manager.

Upon finalizing the design of the data warehouse, our team developed multiple data marts to cover the needs of each of the company’s departments, namely Corporate Finance and HR,, Sales and Marketing, DME – Durable Medical Equipment, and Individual business units distributed across the country.

My ETL teams efforts covered the extraction of data from multiple sources, cleansed and validated and applied the transformation rules and finally publish to the data warehouse storage systems. I also designed and built the processes and scripts to handle the procedures of ETL. Our team used DB2 9.5 for the Data Store.

Towards the operations efforts, our team created several processes to completely processes the ETL and generation of the cubes is totally automated. Also designed the handling of error and failures mechanisms and processes.

On performance aspect our data warehouse model is designed in a fashion to keep data load time low. multi partitioning, aggregation of information, multi file cubes, materialized query and indexing.

Our data warehouse captured data from number of sources, hat grew from nothing to over 4.5 Terra bytes the period of three years. At this time our data warehouse size is and growing 4 % every quarter.
