Sr. Oracle Database Administrator 2000 to Present

• Technical lead in the configuration, installation, administration, troubleshooting and support of 3 node Oracle 10g Rel2 RAC on Redhat Linux. This project was initiated in order to achieve the maximum availability, scalability and reliability for the mission critical eCommerce ATG environment.

• Prepared for our team an exhaustive install document with steps on how to successfully install a 2 node Cluster RAC on Linux using VMware Server. This allowed junior members on the DBA team to successfully install RAC on a single physical machine running multiple operating systems allowing software development and testing to be done in isolation protecting critical data as well as he server environment

• Architected, implemented, documented and maintained all disaster recovery procedures for OfficeMax using Oracle Dataguard (physical and logical standby) and EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) solutions to protect the company mission critical systems from failures, errors and/or corruptions.

• Successfully designed, managed and implemented new JDA software called EKB (Enterprise Knowledge Base) throughout the System Delivery Life Cycle (SDLC). This initiative was an area of pride for me since it centralized and delivered visibility to critical business information that enabled timely and accurate decision making that resulted in increased overall productivity and reduced cost.

• Provided technical lead expertise in rolling out new software called Channel Clustering by Intellect (CCI), a multi-tier distributed application that used sophisticated data-mining engines to form optimal groups of a company's stores and relative item rankings for those groups.

• Have extensive experience in supporting OLTP and Data warehouse production databases environments including the installation, upgrade, capacity planning, performance tuning, emergency response, security and auditing, promotion of database changes and patching the RDBMS software and instances.

• Created and supported many terabyte size databases. Used Transportable Tablespaces for migrating data to archive database (20TB). Backups were done using EMC Timefinder (BCV Split/Establish). Provided Table and Index management support and implemented automated detection and rebuilding of “unusable” indexes. Performed regular Table Partition Truncates and added space to the DWS.

• Involved in Application/database tuning and code review; used AWR, ADDM, OEM, autotrace, explain plans and tracing at the session and instance level. Also, databases gained increased performance benefits by implementing table and index partitioning and index organized tables in the production data warehouse environment. Identified low cardinality columns in search criteria and used bitmap indexes to improve selectivity.

• Designed and developed the standard Oracle environment for OfficeMax that included a consistent set of scripts and directory structures across all hosts of the Oracle environment. Designed and implemented multiple utilities that automated database administration; introduced environment standards and created tools to enforce them; created scripts to support speedy troubleshooting of database problems.

• Performed database modeling and reverse engineering using Erwin data modeler.

• Gained increased performance benefits by implementing table and index partitioning and index organized tables in the production data warehouse environment. Identified low cardinality columns in search criteria and used bitmap indexes to improve selectivity.

• Spearheaded an effort of cost cutting measure to migrate low commodity databases to an open source technology. Among the many PostgresQL and MySQL were identified to be the possible candidates. The evaluation process was initiated by frequently bringing vendors (Enterprise DB) on site in knowledge sharing and proving the benefits of the open source technology.

• Participated in an enormous effort of data center relocation from Shaker Heights, Ohio to Itasca, Illinois, during Boise Cascade merger with OfficeMax. This initiative was a good example of manifesting my strengths and capabilities in the backup and recovery arena as well as the Oracle standby features. After countless over night hours, the relocation project was completed successfully.

• Lead a huge effort of consolidating Oracle servers. This resulted in big cost savings for the company in reference to Oracle licenses and in reducing Sun Solaris inventory.

• Participated in evaluating database tools such as Toad, Quest spotlight, live re-org and SQL Optimizer. The tools were finally purchased and implemented within the company for their extensive ease of use and manageability.

• Administered and managed Oracle 10g SAP Portal and PR2 instances.

• Configured and installed Oracle Enterprise Manager Repository solution for all the critical databases. Installed agents on each server along with customized configuration to the xml files running on Veritas cluster.

• Designed and developed OfficeMax backup and recovery strategy. Experienced in performing open, closed and logical database backups. Installed and configured catalog database for Recovery Manager (RMAN). Used RMAN to take full and incremental backups. Duplicated databases using RMAN into same server as well as across different hosts. Configured backups to tapes using Tivoli Data Protection (TDP) and Netbackup. Performed database point in time recovery as well as Tablespace Point in Time Recovery (TSPITR).

• Developed customized database refresh shell scripts for the Oracle data pump feature in 10g which enabled fast bulk data and metadata movement between the Oracle databases.

• Applied Oracle Critical Patch Updates on a quarterly basis to provide security fixes for all the production and non-production PCI and Sox compliance databases.

• Mentored and RDBMS standards technology transfer among peers and DBA personnel, and provided developers with best practices regarding performance issues and SQL-PL/SQL structure. Most performance tuning efforts resulted in 100-300% improvements in response times.

• Designed and architected a 24x7 database monitoring solution using HPOpenview. Customized shell scripts were written and incorporated with Openview to check for databases and listener availability, file system usage etc.

• Developed a proactive trend analysis procedure for the database performance & tuning. It covered a bottom up approach to find a bottle neck that might be at the OS, database and SQL levels. One major component of the procedure dealt with interpreting the Statspack report.
