 Distributed Product Development  Developed a global strategy for product development for Hewlett Packard R&D. Started a development center in India with satellite teams in Singapore and China and moved part of the R&D work to these low cost centers. Managed 650 engineers with 25M/year budget.

 Outsourced R&D Management – Worked with outsourced companies in six low cost countries to perform routine development and testing activities at HP. Managed the program with 1200 outsourced engineers with 47M/year budget.

 Technology Collaboration – Further reduced R&D cost and time to market by creating technology collaborations with companies like Motorola, TI, Conexant, Matsushita, NEC and other companies while managing a start up business for HP. Managed internal R&D team as well provided day to day interface with partner R&D teams.

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 Created an offshore R&D center in India with 650 engineers. Created a flexible staffing model at this center with strategic partnerships with external engineering suppliers.

 Delivered complete firmware (RTOS) with more than 5 million lines of code for large laser printer multifunctional devices from the R&D center in India.

 Delivered complete fax system solutions with a small team of 15 engineers in collaboration with engineering teams at Motorola, TI, Conexant, Panasonic and others. Grew the business to 104M/year in 4 years.

 Delivered 126M/year in R&D savings. Sold the concept of global and offshored R&D to HP Senior Executives and grew it to 9 global R&D centers (some HP owned) with 2000+ offshore workers and 72M annual budget.

Created the center in partnership with Alliant University. The center is focused on making global sourcing activities sustainable for both companies and suppliers. Center consists of senior business managers with experience in global sourcing, program management and global supply chain management, academic researchers in MIS and organizational psychology areas and attorneys with experience in developing global sourcing contracts.

Director II, IT/Software Development Center (2005 – 2008)

Responsible for creating a network of HP owned and supplier provided offshore development centers and delivering innovative and high quality IT applications, Software and Consumer Electronics (e.g.: printers, camera, fax, copiers and scanners) products at a lower cost.

• Managed $72M/year budget, 650 HP employees and 1200+ vendor employees and delivered $126M/year in annual savings.

• Established a unified eco-system of global IT, Software and engineering delivery centers comprising of 3 HP owned centers in Shanghai, Singapore and Bangalore and a network of outsource suppliers in 5 countries (India, China, Brazil, Mexico and Ukraine).

• Took a foreign assignment to India and Singapore from where I created and managed a 650 engineer IT, software development and BPO center in Bangalore India and satellite teams in Singapore and Shanghai. Worked with internal customers (divisional VPs) to identify programs that could be delivered from these centers and then managed them to deliver them on time, within budget and with high quality. Also managed programs being delivered by external partners like Wipro, TCS and Cap Gemini. (Multiple large programs with 2000+ engineers).

• Led interdisciplinary teams to develop and deliver several LaserJet, inkjet, Scanner and camera products. Managed the program through various gates and check points. Managed and maintained program NPV and profitability through out the development cycle.

o Delivered Internet software, enterprise software, Windows applications, drivers, firmware and ASICs.

o Created core software to provide common user experience when using any HP printer, scanner or camera product. Created versions of this software to be shipped with each HP printer, scanner and camera.

o Created a portal for small and medium companies to plan and implement their retails promotion programs. Developed a web site for online ordering of supplies. Developed portal for online ordering of media on CD and DVD.

o Developed output management product line. This enterprise software allows management and accounting of print jobs with multiple input and output devices.

o Created integrated firmware for inkjet and laserjet printers.

• Encouraged innovation culture at Asian centers. Instituted “Innovation Fest” in which innovative ideas from engineers were recognized and funded.

Director II, Offshore Services and Development – San Diego (2000 – 2005)

Responsible for leading a group wide initiative to lower HP’s cost structure through selective use of global talents in IT, software development, product engineering and back office operations and integrating them effectively with in-house teams. (P/L accountability for the initiative)

• Created strategy, a pool of qualified vendors and an effective program management process and managed all phases of outsourcing to deliver programs on time and at substantial savings compared to doing them in-house. In four years, the outsourcing program grew from 10 engineers to 1200 engineers delivering numerous projects on time with high quality and with a net savings of $70M/year.

• Hands on managed and delivered following programs:

o Firmware for small electro-mechanical devices like Inkjet printers, LaserJet printers, copiers and scanners

o Printer drivers for the above consumer electronics products for Windows and Mac platforms.

o Image manipulation software for various Windows operating systems.

o Analyzed sell-through data (from major retailers) and provided management summary to all printer group senior staff.

o Developed, maintained and upgraded numerous enterprise IT applications.

Section Manager, FAX OEM Group – San Diego (1993-2000)

This was a start up business where I was part of the three member management team and was responsible for leading all technical sales, product development and technical support functions for the business. Responsible for managing the “end to end” system NPV, timeliness and quality of the final product.

• Delivered 6 application specific system solutions in 4 years based on HP’s proprietary inkjet print engine technology. Led interdisciplinary teams of marketing, sales, application development, R&D and manufacturing personnel to manage the product development process.
