PROJECT REPORT
Title : GIS Based Study to Evaluate the Groundwater Vulnerability
Project Description : Ground water has been considered as an important source of water supply due to its relatively low susceptibility to pollution in comparison to surface water, and its large storage capacity. Because of the known health and economic impacts associated with ground water contamination, steps to assess the vulnerability of groundwater must be taken for sustainable groundwater protection and management planning. Vulnerability of ground water refers to the intrinsic characteristics that determine the sensitivity of the water to being adversely affected by an imposed contaminant load. The DRASTIC and VISUAL MOD FLOW models are the most widely used for identifying the areas where groundwater supplies are most susceptible to contamination. In this paper the DRASTIC and VISUAL MOD FLOW models are applied for Saint Thomas mount. The whole area is classified as having relatively poor , moderate, high or very high susceptibility to pollution. The DRASTIC and VISUAL MOD FLOW models are widely used for vulnerability assessment studies at regional scales. The groundwater vulnerability is developed by using the DRASTIC INDEX and VISUAL MODFLOW method in a computer based geographic information system (GIS).
