Cover Letter

Dear employer

Hi my name is Woo Cheol (Ken) Shin and I m a college graduate from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. I am writing this letter to you in the interest of being recruited for laboratorial position as posted in the career website. You may find that my experience in laboratorial techniques including bacterial transformation ELISA and various assay development and chromatography quite valuable for the positions that I am applying to.

First I would like to make it clear that the Undergraduate Research program listed in the resume was an independent work from the school program. The professor personally hired me and paid me with her own research grant. I chose to do this instead of an internship offer I received from a pharmaceutical company. This is because I knew that the internship would involve mostly menial tasks such as cleaning and maintaining. On the contrary the work with my professor aimed at a specific research topic and goal which involved thinking researching and learning contemporary research techniques.

To summarize my laboratory experiences I would like to tell you about some achievements and advances I have made. First I have successfully generated a fusion protein by attaching a Green Fluorescent Protein to a gene in C. Elegans that correlates to X-linked dyskeratosis (K01G5.5/DCK1). This work has been done through the methods of bacterial transformation a method that is very popular among research involving any sort of gene expression. Another advance I ve made was optimizing the method of isolating CNBP of the c-myc system through probing for the G-quadruplex structure that holds the protein. This is a groundbreaking research as purifying transcription factor has always been very difficult.

I fully understand that working in a research lab doesn t mean just lab techniques. One must know how to plan the work beforehand by researching online through NCBI PDB etc and reading various research papers. I can assure you that I have ample experience in that as well. Also I would like to add that all the lab works have been done by the regulation of GMP and SOP stressing heavily on quality of work. I have also been taught about drug developmental process used in industries intensively in drug discovery course.

I have been working consistently every summer in paid-jobs doing research and teaching children living in ghetto neighborhood. My works have not gone unrecognized as Americorps have awarded me with scholarship for teaching children and my professor have awarded me with a RPI-certified recommendation bidding me luck in my job search. I have never been idle as I have motivated myself to spend all summers working paid jobs. I am a strong team-player for many times I had to cooperate with other teachers researchers professors postdoc and even CEO. I do hope that all these traits are highly desired for your future employee.

I m looking forward to an interview if my background interests you. The reference contact information will be available at the interview. I am sure we will be able to determine a mutually available time for either a person-to-person interview or a phone interview. I look forward to your reply and thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely Woo Cheol (Ken) Shin
