INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE
Thermadyne Industries, Inc, West Lebanon, NH
Power Supply Design (06/ 2008~08/ 2008)
* Tested and evaluated a 4.5 kW plasma cutting power supply prototype
(half-bridge and constant current output). Tested the power factor
correction circuit and proposed changes to achieve better performance.
Investigated transformer saturation issue, found the root cause, proposed
solution, and verified with experiments.
Beijing Sifang Automation Co.,Ltd, Beijing, CHINA
Research & Development Embedded Engineer (03/2000 – 01/2003)
* Designed and implemented relay protection units, measurement and
control units used in power substations, including LCD human-machine
interface board, Data acquisition (Various sensors, ADC, DAC), Data
storage (RAM, ROM, EEPROM, FLASH), Communication (CAN, SPI, IIC and RS-
232), GPS timing, Mitsubishi M16c/62 microprocessor and power substation
control function.
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Power Electronics and Motor Drives Laboratory, University of Missouri–Rolla
Graduate Research Assistant (08/2004-present)
* Conducted research and development projects for the US Navy and
industrial sponsors.
* Built a cascaded diode-clamped multi-level inverter with ultracapacitor
as additional power supply for hybrid vehicle applications with improved
efficiency by eliminating dc-dc converters; Implemented control algorithm
on a DSP (TI TMS320F2812) – CPLD (Cypress) hardware system.
* Designed and implemented a multi-phase multi-level inverter for five-
phase induction machine for minimizing the torque ripple and extending
voltage range;
* Teamed with graduate research assistants to build a piezoelectric
energy harvesting system, designed a practical self-powered converter to
capture more power.
* Designed a switching chopper circuit for 50-MVA 13.8-kV system.
* Designed and built a novel impedance measurement device to analyze
stability of power electronic systems; LabVIEW program was written to
provide DAQ functions and an easy-to-use interface, and all the
control/switching functions were implemented with a TI TMS320F2407 DSP. A
three-phase rectifier-inverter-motor drive system was built as a test
bench.
* Analyzed small signal stability in the three-phase and single-phase ac
power electronics systems in the frequency domain.
* Extracted parameters of synchronous machine on-line accurately, based
