Softing, Inc. (Formerly Online Development Inc.), Knoxville, TN 11/2023 – 4/2026

Staff Firmware Engineer – Worked as an embedded software developer, developing software for industrial automation equipment that integrates with Rockwell Automation and Allen Bradley equipment.

5069-SDN – Developed software for a device that acts as a bridge between Ethernet/IP and DeviceNet networks.

5069-SDN FAT Fixture – Developed C# application to run the Factory Acceptance Test Fixture for the 5069-SDN, which programs, signs, and tests 5069-SDN hardware.

GE Healthcare (Contract via ALKU), Milwaukee, WI (Remote) 8/2022 – 9/2023

R&D Senior Software Engineer – Worked as a software engineer on a research and development

team for the Portrait Mobile Monitoring System, which monitors basic vital signs of patients outside

of the emergency, surgery, and intensive care units, who would otherwise go unmonitored.

Axone Scaling Project – Worked on an effort to increase the scalability of the system by

converting from a single standalone server to a single root, multiple leaf server architecture.

Developed a test harness to automate various system impairments to ensure that the system

can recover properly. This was initially a manual testing project, but I convinced the team

lead that this effort should be automated, and this has proven very useful because it now

tests permutations of impairments that would not have otherwise been considered, and can

be added to the continuous integration system. It has found multiple issues without our

system, including an issue that was in RTI (vendor) code

Was tasked with resolving the differences that have emerged over time in hundreds of QoS (Quality of Service) parameters between XML files in Git, and the Excel spreadsheet model that originally generated them. I developed automation to compare the contents of the spreadsheet against the XML files to simplify this process. The automation simplified the effort enough that it was possible for a junior developer to take over the work.

L3 Harris ForceX, Nashville, TN (Hybrid) 11/2021 – 8/2022

Senior Specialist Software Engineering – Worked as a software developer on a team that develops software for the WC-135 aircraft as part of the Constant Phoenix program which detects nuclear bomb tests.

Developed a set of loggers to maintain a paper trail of all of the activities happening within the sample collection systems, as well as to serve as diagnostics to correct problems that occur.

Investigated Sparx Enterprise Architect and Cameo Enterprise Architecture for use by the team to do UML design work.

Developed materials to get new developers up to speed (at the moment they plan to add six new developers to the team).

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Contract via TEKsystems), Knoxville, TN (Remote) 4/2021 – 10/2021

Software Engineer – Worked as a software developer on a team that develops tools to maximize utilization of satellite imagery.

PSICLOPS – Uses pairs of satellite images to infer the elevation of features in the images.

Documented the onboarding process so that new developers can be productive in days instead of weeks.

Debugged issues with a python script used to mask out portions of a satellite image containing water.

Translated the python script into C++ with a number of optimizations (used in-memory temporary files to increase performance, eliminated reopening of files).

Phelps2020, Knoxville, TN 10/2020 – 4/2021

Translated Matlab code into C++ production code using OpenCV.

RDI Technologies, Knoxville, TN 3/2020 – 9/2020

Senior Software Engineer – Worked as a software developer on the Iris M and Iris CM systems, which uses video to detect vibration in equipment, and then presents the results in the form of a “motion amplification” video showing what is moving, and to what degree.

DT-2100 Tachometer Project

Modified the Iris CM to interact with the DT-2100 tachometer via USB, using regular expressions to parse the responses.

Modified the triggering subsystem within the Iris CM so that it can monitor the tachometer and capture video when the speed measured by the tachometer exceeds specified thresholds.

Modified the Iris M to allow the user to specify a list of emails to be notified when a sensor trigger fires.

Modified the Iris CM so that it can synchronize the list of email addresses with the Iris M.

Modified the Iris CM to generate a waveform and spectrum plot of the sensor that generated the trigger, as well as a motion amplification video for the period when the trigger was generated.

Modified the Iris CM to upload the waveform plot, spectrum plot and motion amplification video to an Amazon S3 bucket, where it is retained for up to a month.

Modified the Iris CM to send an HTML formatted email using Twillio SendGrid, containing the waveform plot, spectrum plot, and motion amplification video to the designated email list.

Created ASP.NET web application to allow users to subscribe or unsubscribe to these emails.

Debugged issues with low-level DLLs written in C++ so that they can be used in a console application (they were initially designed to work only in Windows applications.

New Software Notification Project

Modified the Iris M to check if new software is available the user is licensed to download, optionally display a PDF describing the new features of the software, and then allow them to download the software from an Amazon S3 bucket.

JointVue, Knoxville, TN 11/2018 – 2/2020
