Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for your SQL Server Database position. The opportunity to support your enterprise database environment draws on over 30 years of experience in database development, administration, performance engineering, server security, high availability (HA), disaster recovery (DR), documentation, and routine backups and restores. This experience includes SQL Server, Oracle, Azure, AWS, and Snowflake. I have architected and supported multiple end-to-end pipelines with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery or Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) that Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) data, creating golden single sources of data for multiple companies with varied services and products.

At H5 Holdings, I designed, built, and delivered a SQL Server Always On Availability Groups solution, using synchronous/asynchronous replication modes for reporting, HA, and DR, supporting the largest Ignition SCADA DATA deployment in North America. I have provided 24x7 on-call support across enterprise SQL Server environments, led multiple SQL Server instance consolidation efforts delivering hard-dollar savings of up to $1.2 million annually, and led end-of-life upgrade projects from SQL 6.5 through SQL 2025. I have designed SQL Server transactional replication solutions, alleviating reporting throughput on Production SQL Servers by up to 25%. I have implemented least-privilege security through Active Directory Groups and Service accounts, as well as Transparent Data Encryption to protect sensitive data. I have used nearly every third-party tool available for SQL Server Backup and Maintenance, including my favorite, Ola Hallengren’s “SQL Server Maintenance Solution”, helping clients realize estimated cost savings of over $300,000 by removing over 200 TB of outdated backup files, improving throughput for batch processing and nightly processes. These responsibilities require disciplined change planning, monitoring, incident response, and recovery practices across business-critical systems.

Administration work includes following Microsoft best practices documentation, creating and following standards, index and statistics maintenance, monitoring with native SQL tools such as Dynamic Management Views, execution plans, Activity Monitor, Profiler, Extended Events, Query Store, proprietary and homegrown queries, along with 3rd-party tools such as Quest Foglight, SolarWinds, Idera, Redgate, and my all-time favorite Brent Ozar’s “First Responders Toolkit”. Performance tuning is a consistent focus where I resolve bottlenecks and improve query response times. My most recent tuning efforts have increased query performance by 25% and shortened DBT model runtimes by 15%.

I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to your team and am confident that my experience aligns well with the requirements of the Database position. I look forward to discussing how my background and skill set align with your needs. Please feel free to contact me to discuss my application further.
