Collect treatment records from all non-VA providers you have seen for these conditions. You do not need to request VA medical records—VA will obtain those automatically. Focus solely on private treatment sources.

Step 3 – Obtain Witness Statements

Identify family members, friends, coworkers, or others who have witnessed either the in-service incident or ongoing struggles since then. If you were married while in service, your spouse’s statement would be especially valuable. Witnesses can submit statements in any format—typed or handwritten—provided they are signed and dated. These statements strengthen lay-centered establishing evidence of continuity and impact.
