EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences – Bioelectronics, University of California At Berkeley, June 19, 1976.

From 7/74-12/74 and 7/75-3/76 was an engineering cooperative student assigned to NASA/ARC from University of California at Berkeley.

• During both cooperative periods, designed advanced bioinstrumentation

• This instrumentation was intended primarily for experiments studying cardiovascular deconditioning induced by weightlessness (simulated by bedrest) and measured by inducing a mild stress, similar to that from the Space Transportation System Earth-to-orbit Shuttle. Testing included lower body negative pressure (LBNP) tests and centrifugation tests on human subjects.

• Instrumentation designed by Christopher Leidich included: a) a Cardiac R-Wave Detector for use in bedrest studies and centrifugation tests, as well as for clinical applications

b) a circuit to measure systolic time intervals from electrocardiogram input, a reflection of the hydraulic efficiency of the vascular system

c) an electronic differentiator for measurement of the left ventricular pressure for use with research with dogs in a cardiovascular laboratory at NASA/ARC

d) the sensor portion of an Impedance Plethysmograph, yielding a change in impedance which directly relates to blood flow to be used as a safety indicator in NASA centrifugation tests and LBNP tests - the Impedance Plethysmograph was an alternate means of obtaining blood flow information that was also yielded by the Continuous Wave Ultrasonic Doppler Flowmeter.

• Collaborated with a NASA/ARC scientist in an investigation for a project for a UC Berkeley graduate level class at the Pacific Medical Center, in San Francisco, on "the Clinical Aspects of Bioengineering"

• Used a NASA/ARC Continuous Wave Doppler Flowmeter to monitor a 49-year-old woman's left & right temporal arterial blood flow and jugular vein blood flow - before, during & after she had a mitral valve replacement. My Investigation was intended to measure and characterize the nitrogen bubbles induced by the artificial heart pump during surgery.
