• Wrote and produced more than 120 in-depth articles, videos, infographics and animations annually, simplifying complex topics to be clearly understood by 50,000 BNSF team members. Complex topics included railroad operations, federal regulations, locomotive technology, healthcare benefits, financial earnings and more.
• Effectively directed the internal communications strategy during BNSF's acquisition of MRL Railway, facilitating the integration of both corporate cultures, workforces, and organizational frameworks.
• Spearheaded the successful implementation of a new employee portal and two-way communication app (on mobile devices) for BNSF’s 45,000 deskless employees. This two-year digital transformation project showcased my project management and technical expertise, my ability to lead a diverse, cross-departmental team of 20 and my ability to produce in-depth corporate governance documentation to ensure long-term success. This project resulted in 82% of employees actively using the new app within the first 30 days.
• Managed a $2 million annual budget, consistently under budget with successful completion of all programs.
• Developed and managed “Leader Resources,” BNSF’s first-ever first-line supervisors’ communications toolkit, website and monthly newsletter. This project resulted in BNSF’s 4,800 first-line supervisors reporting a 68% year-over-year increase in their confidence being a “trusted resource” for their direct reports.
• Led BNSF’s first-ever People strategy, where I introduced and oversaw a team of 10 communications professionals who regularly interviewed and featured employees across the BNSF network, focusing on their unique jobs, hobbies or community involvement. Once interviewed, each was presented as a video, written article or podcast to “bring the human touch” back into the workplace.
• Created all COVID-19 communications for 50,000 employees and 15,000 contractors. This project proved my ability to remain flexible as conditions changed, my website design and development expertise and my ability to translate complex medical information into easy-to-understand messaging. This multi-year effort resulted in 95% of all employees receiving federally mandated vaccinations by BNSF’s required deadline.
• Built robust change management and crisis communication plans for diverse corporate programs, which included developing messaging, creating articles, producing videos and designing related graphics.
• Led communications research including survey design, deployment and analysis to maintain an ongoing understanding of employees’ mindsets, and for launching, promoting and managing employee communication tools. • Produced quarterly Railway magazine for 50,000 employees and 10,000-plus retirees; conducted interviews, contributed articles, and oversaw writers, designers and photographers, always distributed before the deadline and within budget.
