Hello,
I am a recent graduate from the University of California, Riverside with a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering. I have been looking into whether I want to pursue a career within the medical field or the engineering field; however, optometry interests me the most in the medical field. I recently started to shadow Dr. Zaki and his technician at Vision Works in Corona. The experiences and lessons that I learned from them lined up with the initial excitement that I had before I started to shadow them.
The ‘assembly line’ of how a patient’s appointment functions opened my eyes to the attention to detail and teamwork required to allow for maximum efficiency and quality of each appointment. They showed me how to use each of their instruments, which further excited my interest within the optometry field. Instruments such as the slit lamp, auto refractor, NCT (non-contact tonometry), Optos imaging, and phoropter.
Throughout my four years of undergrad, I developed a strong foundation in life sciences, data interpretation, and scientific communication. My academic and research experiences helped me develop a strong learning and collaborative mindset essential for this field. I also recently started to shadow at a pain and rehab clinic in Huntington Beach, where I further learned of that ‘assembly line’ workflow and patient-first mindset. I worked alongside a current medical assistant and nurse practitioner (NP), where I learned how to have proper bedside manners and conversations with patients to ensure accurate and efficient appointments. Along with that, I learned how to navigate a CURES (Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System) Report, medical terminology/acronyms, utilization of Practice Fusion EHR, and formulation of the patients’ report summary.
I am highly proficient with Google and Microsoft suites and value clarity, honesty, and urgency when communicating insights and ideas. I thrive in hands-on mentoring environments and am motivated by opportunities to learn, connect with others, and contribute to fields that impact other people positively.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my application.
Sincerely,
Ethan Bernabe
