My name is Abdul Muhammad and I recently became a Certified Peer Support Specialist.

I live in Zebulon North Carolina with my wife.

I worked as a licensed optician for over 20 years which I truly loved.

In 2000 I became legally blind in both eyes as a result of glaucoma not working in my field as you might imagine it made me very depressed and soon I turned to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with my new life without sight, for the next 15 years I lived to drink and get high.

Becoming a certified peer support specialist has restored my passion for yet another job

To be able to use the experience strength and hope combined with empathy from my life, To help another person is a blessing.

I know potential employers are hesitant to employ me because of my advanced age but I feel my age and disability would be a motivator for everyone {if I can do it in spite of my shortcomings why not you?} I only keep what I have by giving it away. I have been free from drugs and alcohol for over five years.

In addition, blind services of NC will provide whatever technology I will need to do my job effectively and promptly.

Now I am in the process of getting my 1st book published which ignited my healing and recovery, Coming soon. ‘ From my STUGGLES comes my STRENGTH’. March 2026
