● After some time of observing my environment, I became an active member of the store. So active in fact, my store director routinely offered myself a full time position within the store with an added promotion to department manager. I didn't take this offer as I knew I was fit for the job, but the job was not fit for me as I don't typically like partaking into leadership positions. I do perform well in these settings displayed by the offerings of my store manager and multiple suggestions from coworkers, but as I said, it is not for me.
● Customers who were familiar with me often chatted with me regularly. As much as I liked it, it sometimes got in the way of completing my daily tasks as if I am to give someone my attention, I am giving them all of it. However and thankfully, this did not happen often.
● I was often referred to as a quick and efficient cashier.
● When I wasn't a cashier, it was often the case that I was doing janitorial work throughout the store. When I first became hired, there was a man who was labeled as the maintenance guy. He spoke to me regularly and showed me the ways of cleaning or understanding certain requirements of the store. Unbeknownst to me, he was instructing me on these things, roughly for five months, to later retire and not worry about the store falling with someone who did not know what they were doing. Kudos to Nick.
● I was also well liked by the employees in the store as far as I know. I usually kept to myself and communicated with the people who usually displayed either the most work ethic or personality which complimented mine, but this selective choice of maneuvering seemed to be attractive as to those who I did not usually speak to liked myself enough to converse or ask for help if it was ever needed.
● I had a relatively, to put it diplomatically, fascinating department manager who had specific requirements or infinities which bothered subordinates commonly. I even had my issues with the manager during my first six months. Attempting to understand characteristics and mannerisms that would teach me how to properly communicate and translate effective workmanship in their eyes, I worked incredibly hard to prove that I am a capable component to the store. Eventually, I did just that and evolved into the department manager's- this became their and the store director's own words- most valuable asset to the store.
Halloween City, Schaumburg Illinois — Cashier
October 2018 - September 2018
● As this was more of a clothing store, I expected my time within Halloween city to be more lax than my tender at jewel osco. This fact was proven true by the friendlier employees and bright eyed customers who walked into the building. My time here was short lived as it is a seasonal store, yet I did learn a few things while there.
● Whereas jewel was structured and aspired to professional aspirations, Halloween city was more DIY (Do it yourself). While this may come off as a critique, it actually helped settle the vibe of creativity and homeliness. This helped inspire myself to interact with the customers in a fashion that was less restrictive in the conservative sense of the word and more interactive in the ongoings of the customer's day while also assessing my creative and eclectic mannerisms through an outlet which found utilization.
● This was also during a time where a reliance of the union became irrelevant since they do not associate themselves with the company. Even though my own self awareness is as keen as I'll understand it to be, while only having one complaint against me during my time at jewel, it revealed to me that I am vulnerable as an employee; that I can be reprimanded easily, given less chances, ect. Spring 2019 - Spring 2022
● In a willingness to go with the flow and try activities, I eventually stumbled upon Yoga through peer invitation. That class was electric and I felt restored in my mind and body. I quickly found myself wanting more of this practice, which resolved in me being an eventual regular.
● Some time into joining the classes and integrating myself into the community, I was recommended into the 200 hour Yoga Teacher Teaching
(YTT) program. I began the program and as a means to finance the expanse of the program was to work as a front desk worker. It assisted with the cost of classes. I got to learn about the deeper history of yoga and get to be an instructor after? Sounds good to me!
● I was academically and perceptually knowledgeable, I found difficulty in instruction - specifically, the performance aspect. It had taken me practicing in front of my peers to realize an insecurity of imperfection and overall anxiety. It was also around the time of the Covid-19 lockdowns and BLM protests. Personally, I was working as a custodian
(next occupation) throughout the pandemic, becoming an yoga instructor, moving on my own and getting into college all roughly around the same time period. It was a strenuous time, and also a time of reflection and introspection. I learned a lot during this time and took a lot of lessons with me. Arguably, I wouldn't have grown as much as I did without the helping hand of yoga. I am grateful for it and tap into it every day.
● Once obtaining my yoga certificate/diploma, I came to be most effective in smaller classrooms. I had an eye for posture correction and was an encouraging cheerleader for other students. I was friendly and would attract an eccentric, witty crowd of yogis. However, my yoga instruction would be short lived due to a low back injury during practice. Not in association with the studio, of course, simply an error of my own volition. It negatively affected my overall practice and led to my resignation. Still friends with some of the yogis! Winter 2018 - Summer 2024
● My uncle had recommended me for a part time position at the school district after my time at Jewel. He was a FOM (Facilities Operations Manager) at the time and held a FOM position at one of the schools. I applied and quickly got an interview and was accepted as an employee.
● From December of ‘18 to May ‘19, I was titled as a Building Floater. I traveled to different schools as a substitute to a FOM or second and third shift custodians. For a time, I worked under the district's delivery driver as their assistant. This was labor intensive, lots of traveling, and an oddly neighborly experience of knowing the ins-and-outs of the district and its schools.
● I applied to one of the schools as a full time night custodian and got the job by late May/early June. The first three months, I worked the summer routine of deep cleaning the school as this isn't feasibly done while classes are in session. Through this time, I led a group in a project and even substituted as FOM for a week during the summer schedule; meaning I had to keep in mind of several projects that were going on in our building, progress in our deep cleaning with the intent of maintaining quality and thorough inspection of cleaning quality, management, leadership, and retention. I worked with machinery like floor scrubbers and drills, opened and locked down the school, coordinated deliveries and groups, and held team discussions with district management on progression, strategy, group assessment, product replenishment, and increase/removal/switching of summer helpers or custodial staff.
● By the time Covid-19 had spread across the globe, I had done nightly custodial work, working alongside various departments in the school/district such as tech, admin, elective, nursing, pre-school, k-5, PTA and the park district. I was social enough to mingle and establish friendships with the staff, yet known for my work ethic and problem solving. I set up seating for after school shows after having cleaned the entire cafeteria of k-5 after school messiness. Subbed for the FOM for a few days, coordinated with staff regarding assistance of various matters of labor, cleaning, disinfection, repair, transfer, removal, etc.
● When lockdowns occurred, I was back to working after a week. For a time, I worked alone, managed the building, made sure everything was running correctly, maintained the prosperity of the school, and followed the instructions of the FOM via written notes and building updates.
● Summer of 2020 was different from the summer of 2019 due to the pandemic. I had to work alone with deep cleaning/disinfecting classrooms and project management, whereas I worked with an entire team the previous year. Luckily, the school made standard quality by the sheer determination of our crew doing what we had to do individually. The following year of night routines included specialized disinfectants for classrooms into our schedule.
● As time went on, I learned how to operate lifts, tile scrubbers, high pressure water spray gun, truck lifts, snow blowers, leaf blowers, electric saws, drills, electric screwdrivers, and coordination with plow trucks. I received CPR training, Lift Training, Ladder training. Some slight HVAC training. I even tinkered in wire work with fluorescent ceiling lights and pencil sharpener repair, funnily enough. Maine West High School, Des Plaines Illinois — Diploma August 2011 - June 2015
During my four years at the school, I participated in various clubs or tasks such as: Poetry Slam, Black history club, Track and Field, Film Club, Environmental Club, Band, a transitional organization called Warrior Pride where older students familiar with the school helped those arriving as a freshmen, blood drives, book sales, and the beloved Adventure Ed club. Sophomore year of high school, I became interested in psychology. I worked through my time in high school with this in mind taking appropriate electives that would further quench my thirst of understanding and knowledge. Through yoga, and by the circumstance of the pandemic, I became more encouraged and interested in Psychology with the inclusion of sociology having known peers in this particular field. With a full time job, an active social life outside of work, and limited funds, I decided to take on one class per quarter. I did fairly well, until I needed to focus on my mental health and drop out of a class. I do believe there is a future in which I'll further my education. AWARDS
During my time at Jewel, I was rewarded with a sort of district acknowledgement? It's like employee of the month, but quarterly. I presume every sales quarter, employees of all districts were displayed across all stores that were- for lack of a better word- theoretically competing with one another. I got acknowledged for two consecutive quarters.
Received a 200 Hour YTT certificate after completing YTT training. For a year, I was a certified licensed yoga instructor. By the end of the license, I had the option of applying for a renewal or increased training for high certification and licensing.
It may be outdated now, but I completed training as a lift operator and completed CPR training during my time as a custodian. With these, I held a license to operate various lifts throughout the district and certification to perform CPR if an emergency situation were to occur.
-Room for other instances of remembering rewards. I tend not to focus on that, but hey.
