SYNOPSIS

I have been an instructor for twenty plus years from kindergarten through collegiate years in various educational venues from the traditional brick and mortar atmosphere, to the online atmosphere, to the non-traditional school settings of the Montana Youth Challenge, two wilderness therapy schools SUWS (School for Urban and Wilderness Survival) and Blue Fire, and a secondary alternative school. I have eight years online experience using WebCt/Blackboard and eCollege platforms and have a broad multidisciplinary background and emphasize interdisciplinary curriculum development. Non educational experiences such as the military provided opportunities to travel extensively nationally and internationally inculcating a global perspective and allowing me complete military leadership training. Excellent writing and communications skills were honed as an outdoor columnist for the York [Pa] Sunday Dispatch with over 60 published articles as well as editing chapters in Pearson Longman's American Stories and American Lives. Finally, working for US Forest Service for eighteen years as a historical interpreter and fire lookout, working in agriculture on large dairy and sheep farms, and for six years in the recreational industry as a wilderness big-game guide all paints a picture of a panoply of life experiences. This well rounded diverse background, experience, as wells as skills, fundamentally informs my philosophy as an educator, writer, and historian.

TEACHING EXPERIENCES

08/31/24 – Present: Priest River School District, Priest River, Idaho. Responsible for teaching English at the 7th, 8th, and 12th grade level as well as a dual credit college English 175 for the University of Idaho. Establishing outcomes and a curriculum provided by the State Board of Education and also keeps student's interested in learning. Participates in the department responsibilities. Evaluates student progress. Participates in department planning.

08/14/23- 05/31/24: Teton School District, Driggs, Idaho. Taught 10th and 11th grade English in American and World literature. Established outcomes based upon Idaho State Standards and kept student's interest in learning. Participated in the department responsibilities, evaluated student progress and participated in department planning.

10/07/2013 – 05/30/2018: Pro Active Behavioral Health, Gooding, ID. Lead teacher and Behavioral Rehabilitation Specialist for Pro Active Behavioral Health Alternative School. Teaching and working one-on-one with elementary through high school age probation students and clients in need of additional educational and psychological support. Utilized the Restorative Justice program to implement the process of rehabilitation.

Spring terms for 2013/ 2016/ 2018: College of Southern Idaho, Twin Falls, ID. Adjunct Instructor of Philosophy and English Composition 100, 101, 102 in traditional classroom setting AND online. Responsible for instructing classes, maintaining grades, creating tests and quizzes, holding office hours. 2013 instructed online credits of Introduction to Philosophy. Over the course of this time period instructed close to 30 credit hrs.

06/2001 – 05/2010: Harrisburg Area Community College, Harrisburg, PA. Instructed classroom and distance courses in Western Civilization, World history, American history. Held regular office hours, designed and maintained course web pages, prepared lectures, examinations, and paper assignments; organized field trips to New York, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia; chaperoned student Film club, initiated history on film series.

08/2009 - 05/2010: Council High School, Council, Idaho. Instructing 10th and 11th grade US History, 11th and 12th grade English, and 12th grade Government. This high school has a population of approximately 80 students.

01/2008 – 06/2009: Clearwater Valley High School, Kooskia, ID. Instructed 10th and 12th grade English classes, Spanish, and a high school Reading class. This school has a population of approximately 135 students, is economically underprivileged, and has a small Nez Perce population.

07/2002 – 08/2007: Nyack College, New York, NY. Using eCollege, developed and instructing online Introduction to Philosophy and Writing for the Social Sciences. Designed and maintained course web pages.

08/2001 – 12/2006: York College of Pennsylvania, York, PA. Instructing the core Western Civilization survey classes and American Civilization. Held regular office hours, prepared lectures, examinations and paper assignments.

NON-TRADITIONAL TEACHING POSITIONS:

6/21/2013 – 8/29/2013: SUWS, Shoshone, ID. Logistics Coordinator. Responsible for preparing supplies to field staff and assisting in other times of crisis and need. Coordinates with management as member of Emergency response team to track, search and rescue, and intervention as necessary.

12/15 – 1/16: Blue Fire, Gooding, ID. Temporarily served as a field instructor. Responsible for students in the field including completing curriculum and teaching basic field crafts. The goals of wilderness adventure therapy and wilderness venture is to offer challenges to ourselves and to create experiences where reflection, self-awareness and discovery can occur.

11/2010 – 07/2011: Montana Youth Challenge, Dillon, MT. Cadre Drill Instructor for Montana at-risk youth. Served on teams to provide at-risk youth a highly structured, safe environment to develop skills and abilities necessary to become productive citizens. Responsible for providing crisis intervention, counseling, physical training, and other services and opportunities while ensuring safety and security of the cadets.
