Job description Master General Surgery Malaysia.

The general surgical department has four consultant general surgeons, one cardiothoracic consultant, one pediatrics surgeon consultant and two urologist consultants. As a surgeon in training the first year is spent in the acquisition of basic surgical skills this is followed by the first year professional qualifying examination upon completion of four case write ups, log books and satisfactory supervisor report following serial assessments. This is followed by passage to year two where the prospective surgeon proceeds to supervised subspecialty training under a consultant in cardiothoracic for six months, vascular surgery three months, urology for six months, pediatric surgery six months and neurosurgery for three months. The progress to each subspecialty is subject to completion of four case write ups in each posting, paper presentations, workshop attendance, an updated operative log book and a dissertation before proceeding to the final year. As a specialist registrar, I liaised directly with the consultant on call keeping him abreast with the progress of patients in the ward, intensive care, elective and cases awaiting emergency surgery. In the final year the budding surgeon is trained directly under consultants to make independent decisions and the care of the patients from admission to discharge. The final professional year examination is subject to satisfactory completion of advanced surgical clinical training, a completed dissertation, a total of sixteen case write ups presentations and a good supervisor report.

A routine day starts at 8 am with ward rounds in male, female wards, pediatric wards and finally intensive care unit, noting progress of inpatients, optimizing patients for planned preoperative procedure as well as those admitted under emergency. The consultant starts rounds at 9 am and this is followed by a trip to the operating theatre where surgical procedures are done under direct supervision and once the consultant is convinced of the surgeon in training than the trainee is given to independently carry out the planned elective or emergency surgical procedure. Twice a week we run a busy outpatient clinic where post operative patients are reviewed and new cases are put up for the scheduled surgical procedure where the candidate once again is trained to prioritized the surgical operative list. We have a regular CME program, twice a month surgical audit and seminars where the candidate has to participate as a prerequisite to serial assessment. As in other training hospitals the final year is the one where the candidate has to compete with fellow colleagues from other two universities to pass the conjoint board examination prior to being awarded the degree in General Surgery. SURGICAL CLINICAL TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As a post graduate in training, I have been taking Problem Based Learning, Seminars and Clinical bedside teaching (BST) for undergraduates students (years 4 and 5 MBBS) for five years at USM Kubang kerian, Kelantan.

I have also supervised postgraduate surgical students of year 1 and 2 that includes their research protocols.

And I have taught undergraduate medical students (year 3,4 and 5) Surgical skills, ward rounds clinical bedside teaching including surgical tutorials. I have also been examiner for clinical surgical exams.
