My career with the Detroit Police Department began with me attending the Detroit Police Department Academy. Upon graduation I was assigned to routine patrol for 5 years. I was then assigned as clerk to the commanding officer of the precinct. My duties included telephone duties, typing, filing, preparing weekly, monthly and quarterly reports as well as investigative reports. I was assigned as an administrative clerk for inspectors, commanders and deputy chiefs within the Detroit Police Department until my promotion to the rank of Investigator/Detective in 2001; even then I would be temporarily assigned to administrative duties as a special request to various executives. Duties included telephone duties, daily upkeep of appointment calendar, of the executives composing and typing correspondence, investigative reports, arranging meetings, securing meeting locations. Duties also included making travel arrangements, figuring per diems for and reconciliation of travel for police personnel requesting in and out of state travel and training.

I was trained as and performed timekeeper duties for five years. I was responsible for preparing payroll time and attendance reports submitted for payroll, maintaining sick time and furlough records for more than 100 officers as well as performing other administrative duties. I received certification training as a Public Information Officer at the Public Information School for Police Agencies, in Miami Dade, Florida as part of my training as a Public Information Officer for the Detroit Police Department. Duties as a Public Information Officer included responding to crime scenes and notifying the chain of command including the chief of police of specifics related to the crimes committed and giving interviews to the news media covering news stories, preparing press releases, weekly, monthly and quarterly reports.

My duties as a Public Information Officer also included monitor current news stories and compiling information of crimes committed within the city of Detroit. After being promoted to investigator/detective in 2001, I was assigned to investigate cases involving all types of crimes that occurred within my district. Duties included interviews of suspects, victims and witnesses. Prepare live and photo lineups of suspects. Prepare paperwork for cases submitted to court, as well as administrative duties. Duties also included being assigned as the court officer for the investigative section of the North East District which entailed gathering cases prepared from investigators/detectives within the district, processing and presenting cases to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review to be approved for warrants.
