PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Retired Current
Tried retirement but decided that I was not ready for retirement
Kett Engineering 2017-2024
Summary
Did testing and evaluation of Mercedes Benz cars for the research and development team. This included taking cars on road and recording cars engine and electrical systems using data recorders in the cars. Wrote detailed reports on results and noted any issues that needed to be checked by engineers.
Self-employed 2010 – 2017
Did consulting work advising people on computer systems. While doing this I decided to try my hand at writing stories. I had been doing this as a hobby and took some time off to concentrate on it and wrote a couple of novels. I also worked on several story ideas doing research for the stories. I did continue later doing more consulting work. I then became very sick with an inter-ear infection that affected my hearing and balance. It took two years to completely recover.

TERADATA CORPORATION, El Segundo, CA 1997 – 2010
Test Engineer, Software Engineer
Performed testing, analysis of results, first level analysis and debugging of performance issues for each new version of company’s database software and several versions of hardware platform. Worked on capacity planning reports with the team using test results characterizing the performance of the new versions of the database system and of the performance on new versions of the hardware. This information was used by the marketing personnel and sales engineers in estimating the configuration of the database system and hardware needed to meet customer’s performance requirements. Effectively analyzes, corrects, test and measures performance improvements in software and hardware products including Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) software and hardware. Proven success in testing, analyzing and correcting performance issues in new versions of RDBMS software.

Identified issue with version of Intel CPU and its L2 cache being used by company hardware platform that caused performance improvement to be less than predicted. Determined that different version of Intel CPU with larger L2 cache would solve the problem. Resulted in approximately 10% improvement in overall performance of system with some database queries improving 20% to 40% in performance. Produced revenue increase of several million dollars.
Identified performance issue in disk storage system for version of hardware platform that resulted in decrease in overall performance of system with new version of database software. Collaborated with developers to rework storage system driver to correct the problem.
Teamed with system architects and new-feature designers to resolve performance issues detected while testing software and hardware.

Responded to rapid changes in generations of hardware platforms by running series of tests to analyze performance increase. Generated reports to marketing and customer support departments for estimating size of new hardware systems needed by new customers based on the increase in performance experienced by current users of the new, upgraded hardware platform.
Tested, recorded data, and provided performance reports for several versions of multiple generations of database software. Calculated performance increase that current customers would get for new version of database. Enabled ability to estimate size of systems prospective clients would need.
