Self-employed 2010 – 2017
Did consulting work advising people on computer systems. While doing this I decided to try my hand at writing stories. I had been doing this as a hobby and took some time off to concentrate on it and wrote a couple of novels. I also worked on several story ideas doing research for the stories. I did continue later doing more consulting work. I then became very sick with an inter-ear infection that affected my hearing and balance. It took two years to completely recover.

Identified issue with version of Intel CPU and its L2 cache being used by company hardware platform that caused performance improvement to be less than predicted. Determined that different version of Intel CPU with larger L2 cache would solve the problem. Resulted in approximately 10% improvement in overall performance of system with some database queries improving 20% to 40% in performance. Produced revenue increase of several million dollars.
Identified performance issue in disk storage system for version of hardware platform that resulted in decrease in overall performance of system with new version of database software. Collaborated with developers to rework storage system driver to correct the problem.

Responded to rapid changes in generations of hardware platforms by running series of tests to analyze performance increase. Generated reports to marketing and customer support departments for estimating size of new hardware systems needed by new customers based on the increase in performance experienced by current users of the new, upgraded hardware platform.
Tested, recorded data, and provided performance reports for several versions of multiple generations of database software. Calculated performance increase that current customers would get for new version of database. Enabled ability to estimate size of systems prospective clients would need.

Acted as a safety monitor for some of the filming to make sure that everything was being done in a safe manor. Worked on special events including setting up crowd control and monitoring the event to help make sure it ran smoothly. Worked with guest relations helping out dealing with guests. Work with entertainment when Disneyland was running contests that gave away prizes including cars. Also worked some special projects at night after the park was closed. Worked in the offices a few times assisting the office personnel. Note that I continued my education part time and earned three degrees.

Served in the Marines working on the avionics and electrical systems on A4 Skyhawks and OV-10 Bronco. Troubleshot and repair aircraft systems. Manage paperwork and assigned personnel to fix aircraft depending on the problems in the pilot’s report. Verified that the work was done correctly and closed out the problems stating what was done and by who in the paperwork.
