Work Experience

Internship for Animal Science at Camp Hippo Pediatric Therapy, 7 N 600 w Blackfoot, ID 83221.

Hippotherapy is therapy utilizing the movement of horses to regulate the human nervous system. Camp hippo is a pediatric clinic focused on children with special needs. They provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies. My responsibilities included planning and creating activities for the riders to do, handling the horses, managing a team, and ensuring safe practices. I worked on problem behaviors from the horses as well as treating laminitis. I learned a lot about working with a foal and understanding when to back off pressure to encourage engagement.

A positive and exciting attitude was necessary for this role.

I cared for two young boys, one 12 and the other 8. My responsibilities included transporting them from school, home, karate, and grandma's house, preparing meals, cleaning the house, helping them care for and train their two big dogs, assisting with homework, teaching the older to cook and bake, as well as providing a safe space for them to grieve and process the loss of their father.

As the director of the program I was in charge of all aspects of Hippotherapy. The added responsibility was being in charge of volunteers and other staff for the program. I planned weekly quests and created the props/ characters needed. I worked with the team on safe practices and how to handle emergency situations. I was required to think quickly and react appropriately to minimize risk. I assigned tasks and managed a wonderful team.

Summer of 2020.

As assistant Director of Hippotherapy I was much more involved in planning and making activities. This consists of creating a quest to match the weekly theme. I would write a letter and paint any props/characters needed for the activity. I was also in charge of horse handling and safety. I learned a lot about rehabbing an injured horse as well as how to spot tender muscles. This taught me more about body language and pain responses.

Summer of 2017, 2018, & 2019.

I volunteered as a sidewalker and as a leader. A sidewalkers duties are to remain close to the side of the horse to prevent the child from falling off. They are also there to interact with the kid and do the themed activity. Leading the horse required excellent observation skills to maintain the safety of the kid, sidewalkers and the horse. During this time I developed horsemanship skills and understanding of body language. I also helped maintain a clean environment for the activities as well as the tack and tack shed.
